    Description

    The AFL-CIO Technology Institute is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization launched in 2021 to bring the voices of working people and unions into technology development and innovation policy. Creation of the Institute was a core recommendation of the 2019 AFL-CIO Commission on the Future of Work and Unions, a multi-sector collaborative of union leaders determined to build a powerful strategy to prepare our movement for the future of work.

    The Institute is seeking to hire a Policy Analyst to focus on the array of technology and AI policy challenges facing workers, workplaces, and democracy. The Policy Analyst will, as part of a team, help to analyze and write about critical policy issues important to working people and unions.

    The Technology Institute’s mission is to create technology and innovation policies and practices, and build multi-sector strategies that improve the lives of working people and ensure public R&D investments equitably benefit workers and communities.     DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

    • Support the AFL-CIO Technology Institute’s policy work on a wide range of issues, including artificial intelligence, automation and other technologies, worker rights frameworks for the use of emerging technology in the workplace, procurement policy, civil rights and racial justice protections, and funding requirements for government funded research;
    • Analyze often complex policy materials;
    • Develop memos, letters, testimony, regulatory comments and other written materials, and conduct research as needed on key issues;
    • Support the Tech Institute’s work to translate technology policy and other complex issues into digestible information for labor organizations and other stakeholders;
    • Work in collaboration with labor movement partners, including the AFL-CIO, their affiliate unions and state and local labor federations.
    • Participate, as needed, in collaboration with external partners;
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in related field or equivalent experience with specific demonstrated experience in or with labor organizations;
    • Commitment to the principles and goals of the labor movement, social and economic justice and racial equity;
    • Demonstrated experience working in or adjacent to the labor movement;
    • At least 5 years of relevant work experience including use of online tools;
    • Excellent communication and writing skills with a demonstrated ability to write policy-related documents; must be comfortable reading, analyzing and writing about policy.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage relationships in complex organizational structures;
    • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
    • Experience working independently within the context of a plan and as part of a larger team;
    • Effective organizational and time management skills and able to handle multiple high priority projects;
    • Ability to travel and work long hours or weekends as required.

    Compensation and Benefits

    The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000, and any offer will be determined based on a candidate’s skills and relative work experience.
