    Description

The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) is the largest membership organization of asylum seekers in the United States, with over 650,000 members from 175 countries. ASAP members gain access to critical resources and join a collective effort to build a United States that welcomes individuals fleeing violence.

    The Role

ASAP is seeking an experienced immigration attorney to join our dynamic and close-knit membership team as a Community Resource Attorney or Senior Community Resource Attorney. On the membership team, attorneys, advocates, and technologists work together to welcome asylum seekers, share accessible legal resources about how to navigate the immigration process, answer urgent legal questions, and build community in our membership. Each week, thousands of asylum seekers apply to join ASAP, and millions access our legal resources each year.

We are a dedicated and hardworking group who are also committed to sustainability and work-life balance! Our team is fully remote, with staff located across the United States.

    Salary & Benefits

Salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, with a range of $80,000-$120,000. ASAP offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance coverage at no cost, 401K matching, generous paid vacation, personal, and sick days, and paid parental leave.

    Responsibilities

    • Answer asylum seekers’ written legal questions on a range of topics – including both affirmative and defensive proceedings.
    • Help to administer and facilitate ASAP’s help desk and membership system across multiple platforms.
    • Draft clear, actionable, and legally accurate content in both English and Spanish for thousands of asylum seekers, including FAQs, legal announcements, and videos.
    • Continually improve and maintain ASAP’s existing resources.
    • Work collaboratively as part of ASAP’s membership services team, pitching in on other projects for our members as needed.

    Qualifications

    • A J.D. degree and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
    • 4+ years of experience providing legal services to asylum seekers.
    • Clear and straightforward writing.
    • Comfort with technology and appetite for learning new systems.
    • Proficiency in Spanish is required, and fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
    • Graphic design, web design, and/or video editing skills are a bonus.
    • Commitment to providing high quality, accessible information to asylum seekers who are navigating the immigration system on their own.

    Staff Member Reflection

“I joined ASAP in September 2022 after about a decade of direct legal service, including managing a nonprofit immigration law office. The pressures of representing individuals and families in crisis had taken a toll on me. I’m thrilled to now be part of a wonderful team at ASAP. The work environment is positive and supportive, I no longer work nights and weekends, and I can do challenging work that helps thousands of immigrants even without directly representing them as their attorney.”
