    Description

    Nevada Legal Services is the pre-eminent legal services organization in the State of Nevada. NLS provides the full range of services to all seventeen counties in the state. We perform intake and outreach on a schedule established by each office. We also travel to all corners of Nevada providing self-help clinics, legal seminars, and direct assistance to individual clients.

As a Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will be a strategic leader with Nevada Legal Services and shape financial strategies that enable access to justice for low-income Nevadans while ensuring operational excellence. You will also serve as a key thought partner to the Executive Director, providing financial insights that inform organizational strategy and innovation.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Prepare annual program budgets for presentation to Board of Directors for approval.
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, as well as any other internal or external financial documents required for the program's management.
    • Develop and implement systems and procedures for the program's financial management, which comply with all federal, state, and agency requirements and generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Monitor the financial performance against applicable budgets and recommends any necessary corrective action.
    • Establish General Ledger chart of accounts.
    • Review all program insurance requirements periodically and recommends any necessary changes.
    • Administer Tax-Deferred Annuity (TOA) plan for the program.
    • Manage and invest cash for the program, assuring optimum cash flow and return on investment.
    • Conduct periodic and unannounced internal audits of offices, including their client trust funds operating accounts, and petty cash.
    • Prepare and file all required government reports, tax forms, etc.
    • Receive and revie bank statements and gives to Assistant Comptroller for preparation of bank reconciliation.
    • Make wire and/or ACH transfers.
    • Provide all required information and follow-up actions for an annual audit conducted by outside CPA firm.
    • Review and approve payroll transactions.
    • Review the property accounting system.
    • Compare validated deposit slips to the check receipt log.
    • Provide guidance and supervision to Assistance Comptroller, Accounts Payable Admin.
    • Assist staff attorneys with financial planning and calculations for case-related activities, as required.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of fundraising and grant-seeking activities.
    • Oversee program procurement activity, assuring that all ethical standards are met.
    • Develop and present in-house training on trust accounts, litigation accounts, petty cash accounts and other issues, as required.
    • Keeps abreast of issues that affect law office administration through affiliation with professional associations.

    Qualifications:

    • Degree in business administration, accounting or a related field or 6-10 years of work experience with comparable responsibilities.
    • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices, as well as an in-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and financial planning.
    • Familiar with appropriate accounting and financial software.
    • Comfortable making professional presentations to the Board of Directors, outside agencies, and program staff.
    • Able to attend meetings and/or other functions at various locations throughout the service area. Occasional out-of-area travel and overnight stays may be required.
    • Familiarity with legal services, nonprofit, or grant-funded organizations.
