ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION
A Sense of Home (ASOH) strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes and a community for youth aging out of foster care. 50% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth. The homeless crisis can only end through prevention. The model has been so successful, ASOH will scale in the new regions in the coming months. Here is an example of the work.
Within a few days of the LA fires A Sense of Home (ASOH) launched a new emergency relief program, Home Bank LA (HBLA) to meet the overwhelming need to help displaced families who fled the LA fires. Tens of thousands of our community members have been forced to live on the floor in empty spaces. Based on our unique experience, we quickly deployed our systems, during this time of emergency to support those who lost everything in the fires. Home Bank LA was launched to provide fully functioning home environments for our community members devastated by the fires. For the last 10 years ASOH has been perfecting its technology and operational systems to harness community volunteerism, and donated furniture and home goods to transform empty spaces into homes.
Just like ASOH, the newly created HBLA will provide everything for our neighbors to feel at home again.
POSITION PURPOSE
ASOH is in an expansion phase. ASOH HQ is opening chapters in numerous regions in the coming months. Simultaneously ASOH HQ is meeting the moment by launching HBLA while overseeing ASOH’s first ever chapter ASOH LA.
The CED will be instrumental in heralding this growth with respect to advancing HBLA. The CED oversees the IM (who onboards applicants) onboarding and scheduling volunteers, receiving donations, warehouse management, and distribution of household furnishings to applicants, to ensure fulfillment of organizational mission and targets.
HBLA is hiring its first ever Community Engagement Director (CED) to coordinate and work directly with volunteers of the program. Within the El Monte warehouse, volunteers select, design and stage the items for each home. They then welcome a recipient into the warehouse and reveal the stage home. After a ceremony, the volunteers load up the recipient’s truck while the individual or family enjoys some lunch/ snacks and refreshments. The CED ensures that volunteers treat each recipient with community love and dignity in the ASOH spirit. This position ensures that the recipients have the best possible experience and inspire and motivate the volunteers in the spirit of ASOH. The CED educates the volunteers on all that is needed in order that the flow of In-kind items and volunteers continue. The CED has the opportunity to grow within the overall organization.
The CED should value community building, kindness and has a desire to treat all with dignity and respect. The CED should be uniquely industrious, innovative, creative, and can work in any environment, evaluate a scene, identify what is needed and execute upon it. The CED must be a multi-talented self-starter, well equipped to oversee several moving pieces and have the capability to manage staff and budgets. The CED will report directly to the Director of HBLA and HQ staff who are providing support in the first year.
ASOH seeks a CED who deeply respects the achievements, ethics, values and legacy of ASOH. This role is for an individual who can embody the ASOH mission at this unique moment in history, to propagate human connection and unity.
ASOH evolved out of a genuine random act of kindness and continued because the best of humanity showed up. We also believe in providing a workplace that fosters advancement and professional development for all employees, conducting our day-to-day business practices accordingly.
History and Context:
ASOH began as a random act of kindness when the founders saw an injustice and acted upon it. They noticed that young people exiting foster care had overcome the odds against them, achieved securing a roof over their heads, only to be forced to sleep on cold bare floors, and struggle without fridges, stoves, lighting, a table to eat from nor study off of. The lack of means to make a space a home, is a significant inequity that has proven to holdback those working and studying hard to overcome the challenges of the world and create a better future for themselves.
