    About Joy Education

Joy Education Foundation is a technology-nonprofit that provides virtual support for reading to K-12 students and provides on-demand training for teachers, parents and other community volunteers to address literacy needs in their community.

About the Role: Joy Education Foundation is looking for passionate, equity-minded educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors. Teaching Fellows will be on the front lines of closing the literacy gap, working directly with 2nd-8th grade students in live, synchronous, online tutoring sessions. These lessons are conducted virtually via video-conferencing software. Teaching Fellow-Reading Coaches will be on camera with the student(s).

We value diversity of all kinds and seek to build a team of tutors that is representative of the students we serve.

As a Teaching Fellow-Reading Coach, you will teach reading online to groups of 1 - 4 students. You will use Joy Education’s learning platform and curriculum, which guide you through lessons and show student performance in real-time. You will meet consistently with the same students each week so you can build relationships that support student learning and development. This position is remote and can work from anywhere.. Successful Teaching Fellows are invited to apply for our lead Teaching Fellow roles that come with additional program responsibilities and great compensation.

    What You Will Do:

    • Manage a caseload of 1-5 students under the supervision of full-time Program Manager
    • Build strong relationships with students and families that center student identity, culture and interest
    • Provide direct instruction and intervention support in the area of reading for students using Joy Education curriculum and technology tools
    • Collect, analyze and share relevant data to support using our technology tools
    • Engage in individual and group coaching sessions with instructional staff

    Who We’re Looking For:

    • You love working with 2nd-8th grade students.
    • You’re tech savvy and technology is your friend. You embrace using technology to engage with students online, both 1:1 and in small groups.
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Teaching Credential
    • You are currently a U.S. resident (Sorry, we can’t hire outside the U.S. at this time.).

    Job Details:

    • Location: Remote
    • Competitive pay rate: For this role, the pay is $25/hour. All Teaching Fellow-Reading Coaches are independent contractors and responsible for their own self-employment tax filings with the IRS. You will be provided a 1099 at the end of the calendar year.
    • Curriculum: A proven technology platform that guides you through lessons and shows student performance in real-time.

    How We Work

We use an Orton Gillingham-based, structured-literacy approach to working with students to build word recognition, fluency, and overall comprehension skills.

    • Teaching Fellows complete our structured literacy program that is IDA-accredited and includes diagnostic, explicit, systematic, and cumulative courses that help unlock each child's deep reading brain through a culturally and linguistically preserving lens.
    • We use Dibels Oral Reading Fluency and an Informal Decoding Inventory (STAR Phonics) to understand student strengths and opportunities in reading. We design individual learning plans based on that data.
    • Students meet with teaching fellows online via Google Meet 3 times a week for 20-30 minutes, accessed via our online platform
    • We use a Virtual Professional Learning Community model to build familiarity with Joy Education digital curriculum via practice.
    • Students work with consistent teaching fellows, after school (3p-8:30p EDT) during homework help or rotation blocks for 12 weeks at a time (M-TH)
    • We prioritize relationships and use a culturally responsive, identity-centered approach to build student confidence in reading and love of learning.
    • We keep track of student engagement and growth in fluency. We share that data with families, schools, and community partners
    • We provide our digital curriculum for free to families for extra practice at home

    How To Apply:

We accept applications on a rolling basis. To apply, please share a resume and sample teaching video link (5-10 min). Please include in the subject line: Teaching Fellows Application
