    Grassroots Asians Rising (GAR) is a national network of grassroots organizations rooted in working-class pan-Asian communities. Our work is grounded in communities that live in the most precarious margins of power: refugees, low-wage workers, youth, undocumented immigrants, queer and trans people, and low-income tenants. GAR’s vision is to build and strengthen the grassroots organizing ecosystem in pan-Asian communities.

    Position Overview

    The Membership Director reports directly to the National Co-Director. The purpose of this position is to drive the development of a shared political vision for GAR rooted in grassroots organizing and movement building, oversee all of GAR’s programs and membership development. The ideal candidate will have experience with grassroots organizing, have a demonstrated commitment to pushing forward an agenda that is rooted in working-class interests, and a strong understanding of the movement landscape nationally and is adept at collaborating with a wide range of communities.

    Membership & Programming (60%)

    • Co-lead and coordinate strategy with membership on political leadership and interventions.
    • Hold 1on1s with 10-15 member groups every month.
    • Conduct regular field scans for recruitment of potential new member groups from geographic areas and ethnicities/nationalities underrepresented in the current membership and broader AAPI narrative.
    • Onboard new members by regularly hosting membership orientations.
    • Strong ability to build trusting relationships with member organizations and navigate movement dynamics.
    • Co-organize in-person membership gatherings/convenings, virtual shared learning sessions in collaboration with GAR staff, members and Coordinating Committee.
    • Organize and host orientation meetings for new membership and onboarding to GAR’s principles, leadership structures, programming and coalitions/alliance spaces.
    • Increase the use of the Asian American Racial Justice Toolkit amongst membership groups.
    • Organize monthly office hours for member groups to create tailored political education material for their membership.
    • Uplift the expertise of member organizations on campaigns, leadership development, base building, political education in the peer learning spaces, GAR convenings and coalitions we participate in.

    Alliances & Coalitions (20%)

    • Effectively represent GAR political vision and membership in coalitions and alliances.
    • Recruit and onboard GAR member organizations into committed coalitions and alliances.
    • Regularly consult GAR members and Coordinating Committee members on strategy, direction and decisions to convey at coalition and alliance meetings.
    • Represent GAR in the Rising Majority Leadership Team, working groups, convenings/conferences, alongside members.
    • Integrate Rising Majority’s 2050 Strategy & Vision into GAR’s membership political alignment building work.
    • Explore potential partnerships with emerging and critical coalitions and alliances to support growing the organizing ecosystem in pan-Asian communities.

    Organization Development & Communications (20%)

    • Work with Communications Coordinator in growing GAR’s social media following, presence and increase newsletter sign ups every month.
    • Work with Communications Coordinator and Development & Operations Coordinator to collect stories and data from members of our impact.
    • Support with institutional fundraising, grassroots fundraising, building individual sustainers and donor drives efforts.
    • Input and update membership information into databases and drives.
    • Co-organize staff retreats, coordinating committee retreats and take lead on organizing membership convenings.
    • Work with Development & Operations Coordinator to compile information on membership and programming for grant reports, member participation and activities tracking.

    Required Qualifications

    • Strong commitment to base building and membership development in working-class communities.
    • Strong ability to implement membership criteria, political education curriculum and alignment building.
    • Ability to envision and support building a stronger grassroots organizing ecosystem in working-class AAPI communities
    • Lead the creation of political education curriculum, membership meeting and convening agendas with input from staff, membership and Coordinating Committee.
    • Ability to make political and organizing capacity assessments of the field.
    • Grounded understanding of the larger political landscape and can move a AAPI membership towards a shared political vision.
    • Self-motivated and can move the work independently.
    • Strong collaboration skills and works well with a team.
    • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet outcomes.
    • Ability to self-reflect and offer effective feedback within a team.
    • At least 7-10 years of experience in community and political organizing, building leadership of members and supervision of organizers.

    Work Environment / Physical Demands

    This position is remote and will require some travel to conferences, including GAR membership convenings, staff and Coordinating Committee retreats.

    Will need to be able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    Employment Terms

    This is a full time position. This position is 40 hours per week. The salary range is $80K - $93K depending on experience.
