Position Summary: The Senior Fellow, Industrial Electrification will play an important role in advancing C2ES' work to accelerate policies and technologies to support the manufacturing sector's transition to a net-zero economy. Reporting to the Director of Industrial Decarbonization, the Senior Fellow, Industrial Electrification will support research and policy to advance industrial electrification, including research on electricity pricing and grid infrastructure costs and barriers, outreach to utilities and state utility commissions on program and rate reforms needed to support implementation of technologies including industrial heat pumps and thermal batteries, and supporting state and federal policymaker education and advocacy efforts to leverage the voices and expertise of manufacturing companies and technology providers. This role centers on the industrial electrification workstreams of the Renewable Thermal Collaborative, a coalition co-led by C2ES that focuses on decarbonizing industrial heat, but may contribute to the development of other aspects of C2ES' industrial and clean energy programs. This position is for a two-year term, with the potential for a permanent posting contingent on future funding availability.

Responsibilities

• Represent C2ES within the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC), a coalition of companies working to accelerate renewable solutions to thermal energy demand, and help design the RTC's policy engagement and advocacy, especially as it relates to industrial electrification technologies, including industrial heat pumps and thermal energy storage;
• Work with the Director of Industrial Decarbonization to identify and conduct research and analysis on electricity market and infrastructure issues related to industrial electrification technologies and long duration energy storage, as well as related policies and programs;
• Establish and maintain relationships with representatives of utilities, state and federal policymakers, companies, and other stakeholders to gather insights on what is needed to advance industrial electrification and decarbonization;
• Drawing on research and engagement with these stakeholders, create messaging, written products, and presentations to educate policymakers and support related advocacy on industrial electrification technologies and policies to advance their implementation, including rate and market reforms;
• Determine and implement strategies to participate in policy fora, advocacy, and proceedings related to industrial electrification at the state, regional, and federal level;
• Assist in development of C2ES' broader industrial program; independently research and suggest potential new areas of focus;
• Organize workshops, briefings and other events on issues relating to industrial decarbonization;?
• Represent C2ES in other coalitions, at industry working group meetings, conferences, and other events focused on industrial decarbonization;?
• Consistently deliver high-quality, well-written work products (e.g., quantitative and qualitative analyses, policy briefs, talking points, white papers, blogs) for internal purposes and for publications targeted to C2ES' audience of policymakers, media, and the general public;?
• Collaborate with C2ES colleagues, as well as partner organizations on research and policy analysis, communications, organizing events, etc.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in related field plus eight or more years of climate and energy experience or master's degree in related field plus five or more years of climate and energy experience; ??
• Familiarity with clean energy issues, including broad pillars of industrial decarbonization;
• Prior work experience with electricity markets, the electric grid, and/or energy storage, as well as relevant state and federal policies;
• Strong research and writing skills;?
• Prior experience analyzing climate policy, communicating insights, and driving towards policy outcomes, preferably in the United States;??
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;?
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and with guidance;
• Excellent verbal communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills;?
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize among and efficiently manage multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines;?
• Commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in advancing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental/climate justice;?
• Flexibility, willingness to pitch in at all levels, and a team player.?

Desired qualifications:

• Deeper knowledge and/or prior experience with industrial decarbonization/electrification.
• Experience communicating to diverse stakeholders and ability to present (e.g., oral and written) technical material to non-technical audiences;?
• Prior experience with climate policy engagement, including working with businesses and other stakeholders to provide policy education and insights, including through advocacy;
• Prior experience organizing events and convenings;?
• Interdisciplinary education and/or work experience related to climate and energy policy: science, technology, economics, business, law and policy;?
• Understanding of state and federal climate and energy policies as well as political and legislative processes.

Reporting to: Director of Industrial Decarbonization

Salary: $97,000 - $122,000 annually, depending on background and experience. Excellent benefits.

Travel, Time & Location Requirements:?C2ES operates a hybrid work environment from our main office in Washington, DC. Local staff are expected to be in the office two to three days per week. If the applicant is hired remotely, physical presence in the main office is expected at least 5 days per quarter, plus limited additional travel as needed to support industrial electrification activities.
