Wage: $17.00 - $17.50

About the organization:

Located in Sonoma, California, Charlie’s Acres is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to the care of rescued farmed animals who were previously abused or destined for the dinner table. We serve as a sanctuary where our 150 animal residents can live out their natural lives in peace and as a venue for showing the general public that these complex, sensitive beings deserve our compassion.

About the role:

Animal Care is essential in providing compassionate care to all animal residents and foster animals at Charlie’s Acres under the leadership of the Director of Animal Care. As new animals arrive at the sanctuary, animal care ensures their safety, well-being, and proper care. Key responsibilities include cleaning, feeding, and assisting with medical needs, while working collaboratively with caregiving staff, volunteers, and the Director of Animal Care. During shifts without the Director or Supervisor of Animal Care, animal care serves as the lead in maintaining smooth operations, working alongside staff and volunteers to ensure the animals receive the highest standard of care.

Essential Functions

Animal Care

• Animal feeding/watering.
• Daily animal health care and maintaining treatment records.
• Daily cleaning duties and maintaining the animal care areas.
• Morning touchbase with animal care and facilities staff.
• Weekly animal care staff meetings.
• Cooperate with fellow caregiving staff.
• Assist with veterinary visits as needed.
• Complete miscellaneous projects as needed.
• Work with the animal care team to continuously develop animal care best practices.

Qualifications and Experience

• Passionate about working for and with farm animals
• Previous farmed animal sanctuary experience preferred, and willingness to learn
• Reliable and dependable
• Good animal behavior and observation skills
• Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet weather
• Able to lift 40-50 pounds and perform strenuous/manual labor
• Works well with a variety of people
• Strong communication and listening skills
• Able to follow detailed instructions and meet time sensitive demands
• Able to learn and process new information quickly
• Team player and self motivator
• Comfortable dealing politely with the general public
• Committed to Charlie’s Acres mission
• Willing to work on weekends/holidays/varying shift times
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record (subject to verification)
• Willing to be vegan on site
