    Description

    The Central West Justice Center (CWJC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Community Legal Aid (CLA). Together, these two programs provide a full range of civil legal services to the low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CWJC currently has over 25 staff working across multiple offices. CWJC staff work on a variety of legal issues, including immigration, public benefits, and housing.

    CWJC seeks a Director to oversee the programmatic, personnel, administrative, and financial matters of the program. The Director will work closely with front-line staff and ensure that they have the support and supervision they need to deliver high quality legal services and conduct effective outreach; conduct periodic program-wide staff meetings; work with senior supervising attorneys to write the annual performance reviews of all program staff and to ensure that the program’s staff receive training in their respective areas of work; be the first point of contact for clients or applicants for services who have grievances or complaints; handle personnel issues arising in the program and attend regular labor-management meetings; assist in handling issues arising with the physical plant; and prepare comprehensive reports for CWJC’s Board of Managers on program activities, problems and opportunities. The Director may also assist in writing grant applications and reports, and occasionally assist with outreach and advocacy efforts. The Director will be based in CWJC’s Springfield or Worcester office, but will spend part of the workweek at each of those two offices and visit CWJC’s other offices in central and western Massachusetts as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be an experienced attorney who is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or eligible for admission to the bar at the time of hiring.
    • Experience working with low-income populations; the ability to relate effectively to a diverse staff and clientele; and strong supervision and communication skills.
    • Legal advocacy experience working on cases involving immigration, housing, and/or public benefits a plus.
    • Experience in management, administrative, or leadership positions in a non-profit legal or human services program strongly preferred.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a management team.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Ability and willingness to travel between organization’s offices and work on site.
    • Experience working with unionized staff and collective bargaining agreements a plus.

    COMPENSATION: The salary range is $105,000 - $140,000 annually, depending on experience. CWJC offers a very generous benefits package that includes 401(k) with employer-paid contribution; low-cost health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees and their dependents; malpractice insurance; paid leave (4 weeks vacation, 3 personal days, 12 sick days, and 13 holidays); law school loan repayment assistance; and relocation stipend. CWJC has a hybrid work environment and requires staff to work in their assigned CWJC office at least three days per week.
