    Description

    The AI Disclosures Project, is a pioneering research initiative aimed at understanding and mitigating the risks arising from the commercialization of AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs). The project is dedicated to ensuring that AI technological development by corporations is driven by the right market incentives, through enhancing transparency and oversight. Our research focuses on the disclosures, auditing, and regulatory frameworks needed to address the incentives for AI companies to “move fast and break things” or use their market power and opaque algorithms to degrade output quality or exploit their ecosystem.

    We are seeking a technically adept and creative Technical LLM Research Lead to oversee and direct all aspects of the project’s technical research, including advancing LLM auditing, testing, and regulatory disclosures research. The role involves publishing academic research, policy briefs, and contributing to thought leadership online. Creative, expansive, thinking is essential. The work will involve managing interdisciplinary collaborations across organizations, directing junior researchers internally, and communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

    Responsibilities

    • Research & Publication:
      • Development of research ideas into actionable research questions and technical frameworks.
      • Creative adaption of ideas from one research domain to another.
      • Lead applied technical research on LLMs, including testing, auditing, and commercialization risks.
      • Publish original research in academic journals and working papers.
      • Translate research into thought leadership through blogs, articles, and social media.
      • Help develop policy briefs and engage in public discussions on AI transparency and safety.
    • Research Management
      • Lead the development and implementation of technical frameworks for LLM auditing and AI disclosures.
      • Manage empirical research projects focusing on the risks associated with AI commercialization.
      • Coordinate with researchers and stakeholders to ensure impactful research outputs.
    • Public Convenings
      • Organize and participate in in-person and virtual workshops, events, and conferences.
      • Facilitate discussions with industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders.
      • Represent the project’s priorities and principles in communications with collaborators.
    • Collaboration
      • Work closely with project Co-Directors to align research objectives.
      • Engage with external partners from academia, industry, government, and the nonprofit sector to enhance the project’s impact.

    Qualifications

    • Degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or a related field.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
    • 5+ years of experience conducting scientific research related to AI and machine learning, particularly in LLMs.
    • Passion for addressing societal impacts of AI and promoting transparency and accountability in AI technologies.
    • Publication record in reputable journals. (A record of working on relevant technical products in industry may count instead.)
    • Project management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks.
    • Experience in translating scientific research into writing mediums and convenings for maximum public impact advantageous (optional).

    Salary and Benefits

    Annual salary range is $100,000 – $120,000 commensurate with experience
