BACKGROUND
OneAmerica was established in 2001 by U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal and has since grown to become a locally and nationally recognized leader in advancing immigrant, civil, and human rights. We utilize grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and civic/electoral engagement to promote justice in three areas: immigration, education and early learning, and democracy. Our family of organizations consists of OneAmerica (501(c)3), OneAmerica Votes (501(c)4), and OneAmerica Votes Justice Fund (PAC).
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Campaigns & Organizing Director will report to the Deputy Director and oversee OneAmerica and OneAmerica Votes’ grassroots organizing and leadership development program, rooted in building powerful, leader-led issue campaigns across Washington state and at the federal level.
This next leader, in partnership with the Deputy Director, will have the opportunity to strengthen and grow OneAmerica’s Organizing and Issue Campaigns team, investing in staff and community leaders to direct powerful bases of more than 150 grassroots leaders statewide to fuel our issue and electoral work.
The Campaigns & Organizing Director will be a member of OneAmerica’s leadership team, directly supervising three program managers and supporting the integration of our regional organizing work (with regional chapters in Yakima, Clark, and King Counties) with our state and federal campaign work. Building on our existing foundation, this leader will have an opportunity to strengthen internal collaboration and culture, refining our internal communication and coordination across the organization to build power and expand our membership base.
OneAmerica believes that power is not given or owned but built when we develop leaders from our own community to fight for our individual and collective liberation. The Campaigns & Organizing Director will be responsible for developing and implementing this power building philosophy across our programming: OneAmerica’s issue and political campaigns, geographic chapter organizing, and our leadership development and training program.
The ideal candidate will bring a background in organizing and grassroots base building with a deep power analysis and experience driving issue campaigns, using their skills as a confident, visionary, relational leader to build authentic relationships while managing multiple priorities with impeccable follow-through.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Issue Campaigns and Chapter Organizing Strategy (40%):
- Develop and implement an organizing strategy to build a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-generational immigrant and refugee base and membership inside of OneAmerica at the intersection of direct service, grassroots geographic organizing and issue campaigns that build a strategic base to win OneAmerica’s Our Thriving Home platform
- Develop and implement a year-round leadership training program which develops staff and leaders' skills around policy, organizing, world view/narrative and political analysis through art, community-based education and agitational training curriculum
- Invest in the development of OneAmerica’s leader-led issue campaign team structure built on a model of co-governance which invests in grassroots leaders' ability to develop campaign strategy, and issue cuts to win our thriving home platform through sustained direct action, town halls, lobbying and creative tactics to move legislative and corporate targets
- Build and manage systems and infrastructure to advance ways to bring in new members and leaders and politicize the base around our issue and electoral campaigns, moves our online-to-offline organizing strategy and builds the power of immigrants in WA state
- Lead OneAmerica’s leadership development strategy; investing in grassroots members to develop through a ladder of engagement through geographic chapters, issue campaigns and leading OneAmerica’s training and political education program
- Develop and execute long term campaign plans that advance our grass tops and grassroots power to win on our core issues of immigration, childcare, education and democracy reform.
Management and Team Building (30%):
- Lead OneAmerica’s Issue Campaign Strategy and team—developing multi-year member leader led campaigns to win our thriving home platform through organizing, electoral politics, and legislative advocacy
- Manage OneAmerica’s Lead Field Organizer and campaign staff holding them accountable to building a strong immigrant base as part of their core responsibilities including supervising and hiring regional organizers
- Mentor and support organizers and program staff to build their local and issue bases via our relational organizing model and meet metrics for their year-round strategic direct voter contact program that registers New American Voters, builds our membership base through 1:1’s and membership asks, and strategically targets geographies that will move our issue campaigns forward
- Run Organizing Team Meetings across all programs, launching power building work, investing in staff’s skills, tracking progress and holding staff accountable to metrics
- Develop a strong and accountable team culture oriented towards organizing and power building in immigrant communities and centering base building
Partnerships & Coalition Building (20%):
- Develop and manage external relationships with key partners and stakeholders key to moving our issue and political campaigns forward
- Lead the planning and execution of actions and mobilizations tied to our thriving home platform and issue campaigns
- Represent OneAmerica at our state-wide progressive alignment table’s (Power Building Table) base building committee and build resilient and self-interested relationships with other organizing directors at the PBT
Fundraising and Directing (10%):
- With the leadership team, co-create and lead a political, organizing and campaign strategy for OneAmerica and regular benchmarks for success
- Manage the power-building program budget and grant reports/deliverables including development, tracking and overall oversight
- Serve on OneAmerica’s executive leadership team and guide overall budget, program and strategic decision making
- Build money power through owning a set of relationships with foundations, seeking new grants for organizing, leadership development and our services to organizing model as well as cultivating a base of major donors
QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES
OneAmerica is seeking candidates who are passionate about our mission and are highly proactive. While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications below, our ideal candidate would bring:
REQUIRED:
- A strong analysis of power and racial equity with a commitment to build power in immigrant and refugee communities by leading with relationships
- Skilled communication abilities to train on organizing principles and techniques
- Strong relationship building skills across races, ages and cultures
- Strategic thinking and excellent project management and follow through
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience in organizing and base building, including electoral, union, and/or community organizing with a demonstrated track record of building a base of volunteer leaders/members
- 3-5 years of experience managing people including direct supervision of staff in organizing or advocacy settings
- 3-5 years of program management experience with a track record of overseeing a team or department
- 3-5 years analyzing and organizing for policy rooted in social justice with analysis and strategy that builds power and measures success accordingly
- 3-5 years of experience leading issue and electoral campaigns rooted in systems change and leadership development
PREFERRED:
- Bilingual or multilingual and connection to and/or lived experience as an immigrant/refugee
- Excellent group facilitation and coalition-building skills and an ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with diverse allies and leaders
- Experience and background in the field of immigration, childcare/education equity or economic justice issues
- Existing relationships and ties with partners and organizations in Washington state and nationally
- Ability to motivate, mentor and supervise teams, tracking progress towards goals and building an internal team focused on achieving high results
- A spirit of self-motivation, ownership, and collaborative initiative. The ability to thrive independently and with a team, taking a project successfully from beginning to end with broad guidance.
- Experience with developing and leading curriculum development and organizing trainings
- Ability to thrive within a fast-paced environment while maintaining effective time management, organization methods, and adapting to changing priorities to successfully meet program deliverables
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to accommodate community-based scheduling needs, such as evening and weekend meetings
- Hold a valid Driver's License
- Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Washington State and nationally on occasion

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to be on a computer for majority of the day
- Travel within the state (roughly 3-5 times a year if Seattle based. If located in other parts of Washington, roughly once a month)
- Ability to have multiple phone calls a day
- Fundraising events: attending events for long hours
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This is a hybrid position within the state of Washington and can be based out of our Seattle, Vancouver, or Yakima office. In-office twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays);
- Flexibility within Washington;
- The possibility of someone starting remotely and relocating to Washington state with potential relocation support
