Job Title: Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications
Reports to: Director of Strategic Partnerships
Supervises position(s): Communications Content Coordinator, Communications Outreach Coordinator, Events and Onsite Promotion Specialist, relevant contractors, and others as assigned.
Office Location: Renton, WA
Worksite Designation: Hybrid
Live in the Puget Sound Region of the State of Washington with a reasonable commute to Renton, WA. Approximately 60% of the work is in-person in various partner locations, 40% is telework from home, and 10% at office. Must go to partner locations or come into the office on an as-needed basis.
This position provides services primarily in Washington State remotely and in person. Training Fund educational operations include limited program work in Oregon and Alaska. The position requires various “in-person” involvement with apprentices, employers, instructors, and community partners at multiple locations; other portions of this role will be split between telework work and the Training Fund office. This position will require travel on an as-needed basis and during some non-traditional hours (early mornings, later evenings, and occasional weekends) to meet with participants and attend meetings at locations such as hospitals, schools, public places (community buildings, event venues, etc.), and partner organization sites. Note: COVID restrictions may require a higher level of remote work.
Organizational Overview:
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund (Training Fund) is a non-profit, labor/management partnership including eight major healthcare employers and the largest healthcare union in Washington State. The Training Fund was formed in 2008 and is a statewide program that addresses the workforce needs of participating employers and supports the career, knowledge, and skill aspirations of SEIU Healthcare 1199NW members. The Training Fund is the sponsor of the state-registered Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium (HCAC) and of the Virtual Healthcare Institute (VHI) serving a range of regional employers, unions, union members, and student candidates.
Position Overview:
The Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications is responsible for communications, marketing, and community relations, to support the strategic services and plan of the SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training and Education Fund (Training Fund). They plan, implement, the overall marketing, communications, strategy for the Training Fund’s services. They unify and align communications across all channels. This position, along with others in the Training Fund, is responsible for the safe, professional, and equal opportunity operation of all Training Fund activities.

Planning and Implementation
- Develop, manage and execute a strategic marketing and communications plan based on knowledge of Training Fund objectives and long term vision.
- Plan in a team environment, including Training Fund staff, labor, and healthcare employers.
- Follow the budget guidelines for implementation.
- Analyze marketing and communication efforts for effectiveness and provide clear and accurate reports.
- Lead assigned marketing and communication projects. Maintain close communication with employers, union, and other stakeholders throughout project implementation.
- Cultivate, lead, and manage a team of communications contractors (writers, photographers, social media and website support, designers, people to network with union, employers, and members, etc.) as well as coordinating with other staff who have communications and responsibilities.
- Develop and maintain marketing database which includes campaign timelines, contacts, communications, status, and results.
- Manage and oversee creation of success stories and find ways to uplift member, participant and stakeholder voices and highlight Training Fund impact.
- Create and maintain cohesive Branding for the Training Fund and connected strategic efforts.
- Manage and report on overall communication and marketing commitments under various grants and funding.
Digital and print
- Continually look for ways to communicate existing Training Fund benefits and services in creative ways that will evoke a response from the employers, members, labor, government and workforce organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Oversee the creation of fresh and engaging content for social media and the website.
- Implement and oversee web and email advertising including SEM, mobile, and social networking.
- Produce marketing materials and presentations for specific projects on a short timeline that meets the needs of the stakeholders and the project goals.
- Write, edit, and proofread copy, design and/or direct design, and oversee production process for letters, postcards, brochures, proposals, speeches, newsletter, flyers, PowerPoint presentations, packages, print and electronic efforts, and other communications as required.
- Plan, write, design, and distribute subscriber emails to members and partners for awareness and marketing purposes; manage subscriber email lists and use analytics to monitor engagement.
- Implement and oversee website and collateral material maintenance and updates on a regular basis.
Events and Onsite Impact
- Clearly communicate the scope and impact of Training Fund projects to all stakeholders–including an understanding of the strategic value each project brings to the organization’s core mission through events.
- Proactively plan, solicit information, and work with Training Fund staff, union representatives and other stakeholders to develop communication processes, define priorities, provide the tools to support them and create an environment in which messages about Training Fund benefits, priorities and special projects can be communicated concisely, clearly, creatively, and effectively.
- Educate people about procedures and processes for communicating the Training Fund’s messages. Meet them where they are in their level of understanding and help them come to know what we do and why we do it and how they can contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Training Fund’s communications.
- Manage and implement the planning, coordination, and execution of Training Fund special events, convenings, graduations and conferences.
Internal communications
- Regularly update the Director of Strategic Partnerships on all progress, challenges, and successes of ongoing projects.
- Facilitate internal communications so that Training Fund staff is well-informed about various projects and aligned on messaging.
- Prepare for, participate in, and present at staff and board meetings as requested.
- Serve as an “air traffic controller,” keeping communications requests on time and on budget.
External Relations:
- Develop and drive a multi-channel communications strategy plan. Oversee preparation and management of all communications material.
- Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content.
- Develop a brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
- Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members and community leaders.
- Responsible for the integrity and perception of brand to preserve our organization’s reputation at all times.
- Other related assignments as directed by the Director of Strategic Partnerships.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- At least 5 years’ experience in communications and marketing with a proven track record in developing and administering a communication and marketing program.
- At least 3 years’ experience in management/leadership and supervisory roles.
- Skills to be a leader, big-picture planner, facilitator, creative director, problem solver, coach, and motivator.
- Exceptional communication skills including: presentation, reading comprehension, writing, and editing, data analysis, and organizational/research skills.
- Entrepreneurial vision that quickly recognizes an opportunity to capture a new audience and a sense of urgency and timing in reaching that audience.
- Current on creative, communications, and technological best practices and looks for opportunities to use this information to communicate with Training Fund members and other stakeholders more effectively.
- Experience managing media relations and media messaging.
- Proficiency in graphic design, video creation and website maintenance systems & applications.
- Ability to critically evaluate and prioritize information gathered from multiple sources and reconcile conflicts.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent time management skills, self-motivation, accountability, with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong ability to problem solve, strategize and manage/prioritize/organize multiple tasks and projects.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s databases, including, but not limited to Salesforce, Rouxbe, Financial Edge, Monday.com, Canvas, Sharepoint, etc.
- Ability to work with integrity, credibility, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Experience working with diverse populations and addressing participants’ unique needs.

- Experience or understanding of unions.
- Proven record of working collaboratively to meet performance goals.
- Knowledge of workforce development in healthcare and the higher education system.
- Bilingual skills preferred.

- Needs to live in or move to the State of Washington in assigned region.
