    Assistant Controller - Remote

    We are currently seeking an Assistant Controller with a strong background in Accounting who resides in one of the following states where Annual Reviews is registered to do business: CA, CO, GA, HI, MA, MN, NC, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, WA, or WI and is available to work and be communicative during core work hours of 9am – 2pm PST. This is a full-time position.

    As our Assistant Controller, you will play a crucial role supporting the Controller and collaborating with the Finance team to ensure compliance and maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with established policies and procedures. You will:

    • Prepare financial statements, analyze cost variances, and provide monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
    • Assist with annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting. Collaborate with other departments to develop and monitor budgets.
    • Coordinate month-end close schedule, including review of prepaids, accruals, bank recs, etc.
    • Ensure accounting practices comply with internal controls, new/existing state and federal laws, and GAAP.
    • Help establish and maintain internal controls. Work with the Finance team to maintain financial records and document system processes.
    • Assist with internal, external, and regulatory audit processes and with audit schedules and preparations (financial audit, 403b, worker’s comp, other regulatory agencies).
    • Review reconciliations balance sheet accounts; review sales, inventory, and COGS reconciliations; work with Finance team to correct accounting inaccuracies or imbalances.
    • Review and record grant and donation data.
    • Assist Controller with providing mentorship and guidance to accounting staff and assisting with their training and professional development.

    Qualified candidates must have:

    • 6+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience including 2 years in a Senior Accountant level role
    • Experience in all of the following areas: GL, A/P, A/R, managing the audit process, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and analysis, compliance and internal controls
    • Advanced knowledge of GAAP and federal, state, and local regulations for financial reporting
    • High level of ethics, integrity, and professionalism
    • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, complex formulas and data validation and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook
    • Experience with ERP systems (proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics Business Central is a plus)
    • Prior experience creating robust reports and ability to quickly learn new systems
    • Experience mentoring and training accounting team members or prior leadership experience within the accounting function
    • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
    • Familiarity with financial due diligence, including profitability and risk analysis
    • Familiarity with accounting treatment of different types of grants and donations
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate clearly and with diplomacy
    • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make timely and sound decisions
    • Exceptional organizational skills; able to prioritize work effectively and meet deadlines while adapting to changing circumstances
    • Self-motivated with positive “can do” attitude and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative environment
    • Desire and willingness to take ownership of additional responsibilities for career development
    • Nonprofit experience and knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA or MBA a plus
    • Experience processing or reviewing payroll is a plus, particularly previous experience with ADP
    • Experience in the publishing industry is a plus

    Pay Scale: Following is the salary range that Annual Reviews expects to pay for this position: $93,750– $130,000/year. Please note however, that actual compensation will be determined by several factors including but not limited to: specific home office location and level of experience and skills.
