    Organization Overview

    The Virginia League of Conservation Voters (Virginia LCV) is a powerful and effective 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for strong environmental policies, educating voters, endorsing pro-conservation candidates, and holding elected officials accountable on issues affecting our air, land, water, and public health. Our work extends across the VALCV family of organizations, which includes the VALCV Education Fund (501(c)(3) and VALCV PAC, our political arm supporting the election of environmental champions.

    Position Overview

    The Development Manager reports to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFO) and works closely with the Senior Development Manager and Executive Director. This position is essential to advancing Virginia LCV’s mission by engaging donors, managing CRM systems, supporting grant efforts, and coordinating donor events. The Development Manager will foster relationships with donors and foundations while executing data-driven fundraising strategies that advance environmental policies and initiatives. Additionally, the role will include executing fundraising campaigns, overseeing donor events, and refining strategies based on key metric analysis to maximize impact.

    The ideal candidate will have strong research and analytical skills, excellent communication abilities for donor interactions, and proficiency in CRM systems (such as EveryAction). Event planning experience is essential, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, collaborate effectively with teams, and track fundraising metrics. Experience in grant writing, donor cultivation, and maintaining confidentiality is critical.

    This role requires someone who is highly organized, a proactive problem-solver, and comfortable navigating multiple priorities while keeping the bigger picture in mind.     Hiring Process

    The hiring process will include:

    • A phone screening
    • A Skills assessment
    • A panel interview with the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, Senior Development Manager, and Executive Director
    • Reference and background check
    • Candidates who advance to these stages will be compensated at a standard rate of $20 per hour for time spent on submitting materials and participating in activities. They will also be reimbursed for any travel expenses.

    Travel

    This role requires attendance at monthly in-person staff meetings and quarterly in-person board meetings. Additional travel may be required occasionally for donor meetings, conferences, or staff events, based on organizational needs.

    Job Duties, Roles, and Responsibilities

    Donor Outreach & Engagement

    • Conduct research on current and prospective donors on a weekly basis, updating donor records and preparing materials for the Donor Update Call.
    • Identify and evaluate new funding opportunities, including potential foundation grants, to support development initiatives.
    • Support fundraising efforts by building relationships with donors, coordinating outreach, and scheduling donor meetings as needed.
    • Manage scheduling for senior leadership donor calls, ensuring timely follow-ups and consistent engagement.
    • Maintain accurate records of donor interactions, track call outcomes, and highlight key prospects for future engagement.
    • Prepare donor briefing materials, including call sheets, background research, and follow-up content.
    • Draft and coordinate donor correspondence, including acknowledgment emails, thank-you notes, and personalized outreach.

    Grant & Data Management

    • Oversee data integrity in the donor and grants management system, ensuring timely and accurate entry of contributions, communications, and engagement activities.
    • Maintain and update the Donor Contact Master Sheet to track outreach efforts, scheduled meetings, and key donor updates.
    • Analyze donor data to identify trends, assess engagement levels, and support strategic fundraising decisions.
    • Manage online grant dashboards to track deadlines, funding statuses, and reporting requirements.
    • Draft grant proposals and reports in collaboration with program staff, ensuring alignment with funding priorities.
    • Monitor development metrics, providing regular updates on fundraising progress and goals.

    Communications & Event Planning

    • Develop and coordinate email campaigns targeting donor segments, ensuring alignment with organizational messaging and priorities.
    • Plan and execute small-scale donor engagement events, both in-person and virtual, handling logistics, invitations, and follow-ups.
    • Assist in the planning and execution of larger donor events in collaboration with the Senior Development Manager.
    • Prepare and distribute donor acknowledgments weekly, coordinating with the Executive Director and Senior Development Manager for personalized outreach to major donors and grantors.

    Team Coordination & Strategic Partnerships

    • Work closely with the Senior Development Manager and Executive Director to coordinate donor engagement efforts and outreach strategies.
    • Attend program meetings to identify funding opportunities and potential sponsorships.
    • Participate in national development cohort meetings to align strategies with the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) network.
    • Collaborate with the board and development committee to enhance fundraising initiatives and ensure strategic alignment.

    Background/Experience (Preferred)

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, or grant management.
    • 2+ years of experience in donor relations, prospect research, or grant administration.
    • Strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and donor cultivation strategies.
    • Experience with CRM systems for donor tracking and relationship management.
    • Proven ability to support event planning and donor engagement efforts.

    Technical Skills

    • Proficiency in donor management platforms such as EveryAction, Salesforce, or similar CRM software.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret donor and fundraising data.
    • Experience with email marketing tools and digital engagement platforms.
    • Familiarity with grant research databases and online grant application systems.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace.
    • Basic financial literacy related to grant funding and nonprofit development.
