    Position Description

    AAPI New Jersey is in search of a Development Director to lead individual giving, corporate partnerships, and special events. We seek a candidate with demonstrated passion for our mission who will help us continue to build out the infrastructure and relationships that have helped to fuel our strong growth trajectory. This is an exciting opportunity to join our leadership team at a critical time of growth, with strong potential to help shape the future of New Jersey’s leading Asian American and Pacific Islander advocacy organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Create and oversee the execution of annual fundraising plan, with major elements including:
      • Individual giving
      • Corporate partnerships, including event sponsorships
      • Major gifts
      • Special events
      • Lead donor stewardship
    • Maintain and leverage donor database
    • Cultivate robust pipeline via prospect/landscape research, event attendance, relationship development, and personalized engagement plans.
    • Nurture relationships with current and past donors, creating a donor journey that inspires further giving and/or partnership
    • Lead planning and execution of annual fundraising gala, with support from staff, board, and volunteers.
    • Provide supportive supervision to 1-2 direct reports
    • Participate in AAPI NJ leadership team meetings and strategic discussions
    • Other duties as assigned

    Key Relationships

    • Reports to: Co-Executive Director Amber Reed.
    • Supervises: Development Assistant
    • Close Collaborators
      • Staff: Communications team, Operations and Events team
      • Board: Development Committee

    Ideal Qualifications

    • 3+ years of nonprofit development or fundraising experience, with successful track record of major gift solicitation and donor stewardship.
    • Comfort in a “start-up” culture and with creating and adapting structures and processes that are driven by values
    • Strong commitment to Asian American & immigrant communities, social & racial justice, and cultural humility
    • Ability to work independently, think creatively, and adapt; an eager and constant learner
    • Well-organized with aptitude for setting up systems and processes, managing projects, and setting and adhering to timelines and benchmarks
    • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills
    • Experience with Bloomerang or other donor management systems
    • Proficiency in or ability to learn software skills including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Canva, Slack, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail).
    • A plus but not required: language proficiency in one or more Asian languages

    AAPI New Jersey (formerly AAPI Montclair) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2021 to advocate for Asian American and Pacific Islander rights and representation and to promote awareness and education around AAPI culture and history. Through various initiatives, AAPI New Jersey seeks to create structural change, build solidarity among communities, fight for equity for all oppressed groups, while celebrating AAPI cultures. Since its founding, AAPI New Jersey has grown from a small group of community members responding to the rise of anti-Asian hate to a nationally recognized organization supported by thousands, implementing the teaching of AAPI curriculum through its impactful program TAAS (Teaching Asian American Stories) and creating a model for AAPI community mobilization.     • Hybrid office schedule (Tue-Thu in our Montclair office, Mon & Fri remote).
      • Position occasionally requires attendance at events on evenings and weekends.
      • Travel throughout NJ for meetings and events may be necessary at times (10%).
    • Generous PTO including 20 days of vacation, 3 personal days, and 5 days of sick leave annually.
    • Option of health insurance through United Healthcare covered at 80% by AAPI New Jersey, or taxable health insurance stipend of $3,000 annually.
    • A taxable employee wellness stipend of $500 per year.
