Plug In America is a growing 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works on consumer and auto dealer outreach and engagement, EV awareness, policy advocacy, and member services.

    Plug In America is seeking its first Deputy Executive Director who will oversee our public outreach programs, including events, consumer education, and our nationally recognized dealer engagement work. The Deputy Executive Director will also lead the development of these programs. The ideal candidate will bring leadership and strong management skills, deep knowledge of the automotive or electric vehicle sector, and inspiration and vision to take these programs to the next level. This position reports to and works closely with the Executive Director.

    Plug In America is based in Los Angeles. This position is eligible for remote work, with a preference for candidates living in or close to Los Angeles. Candidates should expect occasional travel.

    Supervises

    8 staff (3 direct reports) and 4-6 consultants.

    Position Description

    The Deputy Executive Director provides overall management for Plug In America’s public outreach and education programs, including:

    • Dealer education and certification.
    • EV Support Program, which fields general EV inquiries from the public.
    • National Drive Electric Week and other EV ride and drive events.
    • Workplace charging programs.

    Duties of the position include:

    • Manage the current year budget for public outreach and education programs and draft future year budgets, ensuring that adequate funds are coming in for the programs and track spend-down on programs to ensure that expenditures are covered by income.
    • Have a vision for program development over time; help drive forward the growth of these programs as the EV market changes; work with the fundraising team—which will lead to bringing in new sources of funding.
    • Manage relations, communications and fundraising efforts with existing donors, ensure that our obligations to them are fulfilled and funding continues for future years. This includes donors who fund multiple programs across Plug In America.
    • Manage relations with program partners, automakers, utilities and auto dealers participating in our programs.
    • Manage successful program implementation, including tracking and executing deliverables, data tracking, impact reporting, contract management with funders and vendors, and establishing and overseeing workflow and basic processes.
    • Supervise and develop staff; allocate appropriate human resources to programs and delegate assignments.
    • Review and manage contracts with funders, partners, and vendors.
    • Be a key participant in Plug In America’s leadership team and help provide the organization’s strategic vision.

    Required Qualifications:

    • 8 years of experience in hands-on program management, including tracking expenses and executing successful programs within a budget.
    • Experience and expertise with electric vehicles and/or the automotive sector.
    • Extremely detail-oriented with solid organizational and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated people management skills.
    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Six months experience driving an EV regularly.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience managing technology programs, training, or public awareness programs.
    • Master’s degree in a related field.
