    Organizational Background

    VOCAL Action Fund is a 501c4 advocacy organization allied with Voices of Community Activists and Leaders (VOCAL-NY), and acts as the policy and political voice of the most marginalized and vulnerable New Yorkers.

    The VOCAL Action Fund was created in order to provide a grassroots and independent voice for some of the most marginalized communities in New York through educational and electoral activity, including legislative advocacy, voter education, and community organizing to promote VOCAL state chapters’ mission.

    Position Description

    We are seeking a dedicated Full-Time Organizer to join our team for a temporary position until November 23rd, 2024. As an Organizer, you will play a pivotal role by engaging directly with voters, recruiting volunteers, and coordinating volunteer efforts in Congressional District 22. The Syracuse Organizer will focus primarily on electoral organizing throughout CD22. The position will be asked to support our other upstate chapters. 

    Job Responsibilities

    • Canvassing: Conduct door-to-door canvassing within CD22 to engage with voters, disseminate campaign materials, and gather valuable insights.
    • Direct Voter Contact Phone Calls: Make phone calls to constituents within CD22 to discuss campaign issues, answer questions, and encourage voter turnout.
    • Volunteer Recruitment Calls: Reach out to potential volunteers through phone calls to recruit individuals who are passionate about our campaign and willing to contribute their time and effort.
    • Running Volunteer Phone Banks: Organize and oversee phone bank sessions where volunteers make calls to voters to increase awareness about our candidate and campaign initiatives.
    • Running Volunteer Canvasses: Lead and manage volunteer canvassing events, ensuring that volunteers are equipped with the necessary materials and information to effectively engage with voters.
    • Flexible Work Hours: Be prepared for changing work hours as the election date approaches. Some weekend work will be required to accommodate voter engagement events and volunteer activities.
    • Data-entry: Record and input accurate & timely data into our community organizing database.
    • Support meetings, events, and mobilizations: Support the logistical & programmatic needs of organizational events, press conferences, actions, and mobilizations.
    • Support Other VOCAL Campaigns and Coalition work: The position will be expected to periodically provide support for other community organizing and campaign work. We have a highly collaborative office environment where staff members provide support for each other’s campaigns as needed.

    Requirements/Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to community organizing and building the power of people living with HIV/AIDS, experiencing homelessness, active and former drug users, and formerly incarcerated communities. A deep commitment to social justice is required.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • A car and driver’s license, ability to drive, and up-to-date insurance
    • Electoral organizing experience, community organizing experience, or any related experience specific to community outreach and phonebanking
    • Must be willing and eager to conduct street-and site-based, door-knocking outreach multiple times a week, for several hours at a time . 
    • Proficiency with common business software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email clients).

    This is a full-time position. The position will require travel around CD22. While the option for remote work will sometimes be available, there will be frequent in-person requirements.

    Compensation:

    The salary range $55,000 - $60,000 per year, will be commensurate with experience. 

    A car and valid driver’s license is required, VOCAL Action Fund will reimburse for gas and mileage.
