    The Director of Finance will lead the strategic financial direction of our organization, ensuring a strong financial foundation and driving informed decision-making to support our long-term growth. This high-level role focuses on financial planning, investment strategy, and operational oversight, with an emphasis on creating systems that empower finance and accounting teams to execute effectively. Reporting to the Chief of Staff with a dotted line to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Finance will collaborate closely with leadership to align resources with strategic priorities and maximize financial resilience.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Financial Planning & Strategy

    • Develop and oversee the organization’s long-term financial strategy, including multi-year budget modeling and scenario planning to adapt to a changing landscape.
    • Lead the preparation of annual budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and operational priorities.
    • Build robust forecasting processes to analyze financial trends, identify risks, and provide actionable insights.
    • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and CSO, providing recommendations on spending, resource allocation, and investment decisions.
    • Drive the development of business cases for new initiatives, capital investments, and partnerships.

    Investment Management

    • Make sound investment decisions to grow the organization’s portfolio and ensure long-term financial stability.
    • Monitor investment performance, prepare detailed reports, and ensure compliance with fiscal policies and regulations.
    • Manage the organization’s cash flow and banking relationships, optimizing liquidity to meet operational needs.

    Performance Monitoring & Reporting

    • Design and implement scorecards and dashboards to measure financial performance and support organizational decision-making.
    • Prepare and present accurate, timely financial narratives and reports for the board of directors, staff, and donors.
    • Build financial literacy within the organization by sharing insights and creating user-friendly financial tools.

    Operational Finance & Compliance

    • Oversee the organization’s financial operations conducted by external vendors, including accounting, bookkeeping, and reporting, while ensuring compliance with GAAP and FASB standards.
    • Manage internal controls, contracts, and grants, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to stakeholders.
    • Partner with external auditors and vendors to complete annual audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
    • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing nonprofit organizations.

    Team Leadership & Collaboration

    • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the executive team, contributing to leadership discussions on financial priorities and opportunities.
    • Collaborate across departments to create budgets that address long-term needs and enhance resource efficiency.
    • Lead special financial projects, process improvements, and technology implementations to support organizational growth.

    Key Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
    • 10+ years of progressive experience in finance leadership, with a strong background in FP&A and investment strategy.
    • Expertise in nonprofit finance, including grant management and compliance with nonprofit regulations.
    • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and familiarity with Salesforce (preferred).
    • Proven ability to create business models, performance scorecards, and financial reports to support revenue generation.
    • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of building trust and credibility across teams.
    • Experience managing external audits, tax filings, and complex financial operations.
