    Position Summary

Working within the organization’s Narrative Department, the Director of Communications will work closely with the LV team, organizational grantees, and external consultants while reporting to Liberation Ventures’ Vice President of Narrative Change.

We are seeking a strategic and dynamic Communications Director to lead our communications efforts, focusing on social media, press engagement, and thought leadership development. The successful candidate will develop and implement innovative communications strategies that educate the public about reparations, connect disparate local policy advancements to a cohesive national narrative, and inspire action towards achieving reparations and building a culture of repair. All communications work will be closely aligned with the organization's 10-year narrative strategy to increase support for reparations and the 30-year Reparations Grantmaking Blueprint to make reparations common sense and common place.

This role is designed for a communications expert with a deep understanding of audience targeting and a range of experience developing and implementing press, social media and thought leadership campaigns. Exceptional candidates will be able to organize reporters at major news media outlets, engage influencers on social media and write high level opinion pieces for target audiences while developing creative communications projects, tracking progress to SMART goals and pivoting tactics when needed.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Strategic Communications Leadership: Enhance brand and mission awareness. Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan that aligns with LVs’ strategic goals focused on narrative change, public education, opposition rebuttal and policy advocacy.
    • Social Media Management: Craft and implement a dynamic social media strategy that engages target audiences, amplifies reparations narratives and amplifies movement partners’ work. Oversee content creation, scheduling, and analytics to optimize reach and impact.
    • Press Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with national and key local media. Craft press releases, pitch stories, and respond to media inquiries to elevate the profile of reparations movements and our organizational initiatives. Develop longer lead investigative and data visualization projects with core media outlets.
    • Opinion Leadership: Strategize and oversee the development of opinion pieces, blogs, and other influential content that positions LV and its partners as thought leaders in the reparations conversation.
    • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with research teams, community organizers, and LV staff to synchronize messaging and maximize the impact of collective media efforts.
    • Monitoring and Reporting: Track and analyze communications metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and tactics, adapting plans as needed to meet organizational objectives.
    • Training and capacity building: Develop and lead communications trainings to disperse LVs’ narrative research into tactical communications projects across the reparations movement. Offer capacity support to movement partners with local reparations projects and serve as a national connector between projects’ media relations.

    Key Qualifications:

    • Mission Alignment: This person holds a deep alignment with LV’s mission, has a strong understanding of LV’s field of work – racial, economic and gender justice as well as their intersections historically and in modern day – and has a demonstrated commitment to LV’s beliefs in practice.
    • Basic skills: This person has excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex issues clearly and persuasively to a variety of audiences. They have experience managing digital analytics and social media platforms and an ability to work collaboratively in both fast-paced and long-term strategic environments.
    • Seasoned communicator: This person has a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a communications role, with at least 3 years in a leadership position, preferably in non-profit, advocacy, or political settings. This comes with a proven track record of developing and implementing successful communications and culture change strategies and evaluating their impact.
    • Campaigning experience: This person understands the dynamics of at-scale movements for justice and political and cultural change, and can hold the complexity required to be deeply accountable to a myriad of stakeholders. They are able to see, name, and navigate power and privilege dynamics in a group and contribute to a working environment where all people are equally valued, feel cared for, and are accountable to each other.
