    Description

    The Episcopal Diocese of New York (EDNY) encompasses over 180 worshipping communities in the boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island in New York City; and the New York counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. The Diocese is seeking a Controller in our Manhattan office.

    Position Summary: Reporting to the Chief of Finance and Operations (CF&O) and coordinating with the Treasurer of the Diocese, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. Working closely with the CF&O, the Controller will be involved in the development and review of materials for various meetings. For example, the Diocesan Trustees’ Audit, Finance and Budget Committees.

    The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations with a budget of $12 million and will supervise a Finance Team of five. The Controller will ensure that the Diocese has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders, both clergy and lay, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

    In addition, s/he will partner with the CF&O, Bishop’s executive team, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position in the New York city office. Days and Hours of Work are generally Monday-Friday 9am-5pm with flexibility for early morning or evening meetings. Remote or hybrid work is not an option for this role.

    Duties, Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

    • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
    • Coordinate all audit activity.
    • Serve as the lead for annual budget process, overseeing data gathering, preparation, and presentation in collaboration with budget committee chairs.
    • Oversee the production of periodic financial reports; ensuring the results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Consistently analyze financial data, including cash management, accounts receivable, endowment and other funds activity, and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner. Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, and keep senior leadership abreast of the Diocese’s financial status.
    • In partnership with the CF&O and Treasurer, establish, communicate, and implement all finance-related policies, practices, standards, and security measures.
    • Work to minimize institutional liability in financial operations by ensuring that effective internal controls are in place and in compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
    • Establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on biweekly, monthly, and annual basis.
    • Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
    • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
    • Approve disbursements and contracts as approved.
    • Perform other related duties as required.

    Qualifications/Experience:

    • Bachelor’s Degree required
    • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.

    Salary Range: $150K - $160K /Annually – commensurate with experience. The actual compensation offered will be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to the qualifications of the applicant, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.
