    Position Overview:

    The Managing Director of Development plays an integral role in the development department as deputy to the Vice President for Development, serving as a key thought partner on creating and implementing a fundraising strategy and managing overall development operations. This position works closely with the VP, development team members, and across the organization to streamline system utilization, enhance development department processes, and support the day-to-day and long-term operations of the development team. A successful candidate will be an experienced fundraiser with strong strategic thinking abilities, interpersonal and managerial skills, and a forward-thinking and expeditious approach to identifying new funding sources, creating solutions, and increasing efficiency of processes and workflows to support development growth.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Serve as deputy and thought partner to the VP for Development in creating and implementing a long-term growth plan for fundraising by identifying new funding sources and strategies to engage individuals, corporations, and foundations.
    • Manage development’s day-to-day activities and workflow and help ensure execution of strategic plans.
    • Oversee all development operations functions in support of development team activities and events including systems and vendor management, data entry and accuracy, gift processing and pledge management, financial reporting and data analysis, prospect research, state registration, coordination with the finance and data strategy departments, and department project management.
    • Serve as lead project manager for the annual event, coordinating with vendors and across departments
    • Manage a portfolio of high-level individuals, corporations, and foundations.
    • Collaborate with finance and operations staff to oversee adherence to gift policies, donor intent, and IRS regulations as they pertain to gift acceptance, processing, and acknowledgements and serves as liaison to the finance department on financial reporting, reconciliation, tracking, projections, audit, and other issues.

    Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills Required:

    • Exceptional ability to manage complex projects and coordinate operations in a fast-paced environment while ensuring products/outputs are high-quality, effective, and reflective of the organization’s mission.
    • Track record of professional growth and increasing responsibility in the field of development operations for nonprofit organizations
    • Experience successfully raising funds from individuals and institutions
    • Solutions-oriented mindset, driving strategy and seeking out ways to improve operations and better support fundraising efforts
    • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and judgment
    • Expert knowledge of charitable giving tax and financial laws, state registration requirements, and other fundraising standards
    • Attention to detail and demonstrated ability to effectively organize and coordinate multiple priorities
    • Experience in developing fundraising strategies and knowledgeable of current trends and how the application of best practices can increase the donor base and net revenue.
    • Superior communications abilities, including analytic, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team and individual team members around organizational, team and individual goals.
    • Experience working collaboratively across teams and departments to meet shared goals.
    • Knowledge of CRM platforms. Expertise in Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack and EveryAction are a plus.
    • Consistently articulates an equity lens and analysis into work product by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities, and decisions on race, class, gender and other group identities within the context of job responsibilities and projects.
    • Engages in opportunities to continue learning and skill-building on issues related to equity.
    • Proactively addresses and resolves conflicts across differences; and acknowledges and reduces the emotional labor placed upon people of color and others outside of the dominant culture.

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    This position is responsible for directly managing the Senior Development Operations & Outreach Specialist and Development Associate.

    The National Partnership recognizes a staff bargaining unit, National Partnership United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is NOT included in the NP United bargaining unit.

    Salary and Benefits

    The salary range for this role is 142,055-158,446, with the exact salary determined by years of relevant experience, in alignment with NPWF’s compensation setting criteria.
