    Description

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Controller is responsible for the Trust’s accounting functions and plays a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, working closely with the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller has both managerial and transactional responsibilities, as follows.

    • Maintain and enforce accounting policies and procedures, as well as the chart of accounts and accounting filing system, in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Oversee accounting department operations and process transactions including:
    1. Accounts payable
    2. Accounts receivable
    3. Payroll, retirement plan contributions, and union employee benefits payments
    4. Banking transactions and bank reconciliations
    5. Journal entries
    6. Monthly reporting, such as outstanding receivables, prepaid expenses and depreciation; quarterly financial close
    • Budget and expense reporting to the CEO and senior staff
    • Manage the annual audit and provision of information to external auditors as well as preparation of the Trust’s financial statements and Form 990 filing.

    The Controller will also be responsible for compliance with reporting requirements for local, state, and federal government funds as well as private grants. This includes reporting requirements of New York’s Public Authorities Reform Act (“PARA”).

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

    Required Experience:

    • Seven+ years of related experience. Not-for-profit, government and real estate leasing experience required; knowledge of NYC government and NYS PARA a plus.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the standards and practices governing the accounting profession.
    • Experience with annual audit procedures and informational tax returns (Form 990). Proficiency in the use of accounting software – the Yardi system is a must; knowledge of FundEZ also helpful.
    • Familiarity with third party vendor payment systems such as AvidXchange.
    • Strong organizational skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to follow-up independently.
    • Demonstrated ability to “multi-task,” set priorities, and meet required deadlines.

    Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of accounting software and other financial systems to support the department and provide reports as needed.
    • Ability to share financial information with colleagues outside of the Finance Department and to train junior accounting and finance staff.

    Salary: $125-$135k per year, commensurate with experience.

    Location and Schedule: All positions are located on Governors Island. This position is in-person, four days a week with one day remote work.
