    THE HENRY L. STIMSON CENTER

    Director of People and Operations

    FTE: Full Time 40 hours per week

    Salary: $120,000-130,000

    Location: Washington, DC

    The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), a nonpartisan global security think tank located in Washington, DC seeks a Director of People and Operations. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Operations, the Director of People and Operations oversees the organization's human resources and operational functions. This role ensures that our practices support our mission-driven work, align with Stimson’s vision, values, strategic goals, standards of conduct, and operational objectives, and demonstrate our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

This person understands that any organization is only as good as the people working there and the relationships they build and sustain. This job will require building authentic relationships with staff and affiliates that facilitate the successful candidate’s ability to challenge, develop, and support them.

They will understand that discretion in this role is paramount as is the ability to create safe, candid, and confidential spaces for staff and affiliates to communicate concerns. The successful candidate will bring their love of systems and processes to our growing organization.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Create a work environment that fosters productivity, culture, collaboration, and employee well-being across physical and virtual spaces to optimize overall organizational health;
    • Spearhead talent acquisition strategies that attract top performers;
    • Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and development;
    • Empower employees through seamless onboarding and offboarding processes;
    • Promote employee well-being and optimize overall organizational health;
    • Implement, monitor, and update policies and procedures to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal mandates;
    • Foster open and inclusive HR and operations policy and process changes through broad-based staff participation and collaboration;
    • Empower employees to contribute their perspectives and insights throughout the development of HR and operations changes;
    • Champion transparency and clarity in roles and responsibilities during policy and process shifts;
    • Support managers and staff to engage in thoughtful and frank, ongoing feedback to support all employees’ fulfillment of goals;
    • Facilitate communication among employees and support the resolution of employee concerns, including oversight of the Center’s internal whistleblower policies;
    • Manage staff performance evaluations and improvement processes, including the Center’s 360-degree feedback process;
    • Manage disciplinary and grievance issues;
    • Administer the Center’s foreign visa needs;
    • Supervise operations and human resources staff;
    • Ensure optimal space utilization, including safety, security, functionality, and functioning of building systems;
    • Oversee network administration and IT; identify and support technology initiatives to achieve the organization’s strategic goals in partnership with leadership, program, and other users.

    Qualifications – required:

    • A minimum of 5 years of working experience as an HR Manager or other HR Executive;
    • Prior work experience in nonprofit operations;
    • Mediation and Conflict Resolution skills
    • In-depth knowledge of labor law, HR, and nonprofit operational best practices;
    • Expertise and demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity as well as Stimson’s mission and values;
    • People-oriented and results-driven;
    • Demonstrable experience with Human Resources metrics;
    • Knowledge of HR systems and databases;
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems at all levels;
    • Strong personal effectiveness, integrity, credibility, humility, and accountability;
    • Ability to architect strategy along with leadership skills;
    • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
    • Excellent active listening and negotiation skills;
    • Competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the organization and
    • Comfort operating with a high level of independence and efficiency.

    Qualifications – preferred:

    • Degree in Human Resources, MBA, or related field;
    • HR Certification.
