    Job Description

    Known as "Village in Progress" in many neighborhoods, VIP's mission is to prevent violence through building and sustaining strong communities where residents are knowledgeable about the root causes of violence and empowered to address them. VIP Neighborhood Coalitions deepen the level of resident engagement in community building, increase social cohesion and organize community members around a set of positive and supportive goals that, over the long term, increase informal social controls and reinforce a culture of non-violence. Through this unique approach to violence prevention, the coalitions work to shift the expectation of violence and to address persistent social and environmental issues that contribute to elevated levels of violence. VIP's Youth Organizing Institute engages youth to explore the root causes of violence and develop and present violence prevention strategies. During the academic year youth organizers develop and facilitate workshops to youth programs in and around Boston.

    DUTIES

    • Support, supervise and manage the community and youth organizing and engagement work in the VIP neighborhoods.
    • Develop and manage the VIP Youth Organizing Institute including, but not limited to developing and implementing the summer and academic year programming.
    • Facilitate Youth RISE Rally planning process: lead youth and partner planning committees.
    • Hire and supervise summer intern(s).
    • Submit applications to City of Boston summer and academic year youth employment programs, and supervise youth assigned to VIP.
    • Represent VIP on Leadership Team for the Bureau's Summer Enrichment Programs.
    • Co-facilitate VIP training sessions as appropriate.
    • Provide support to VIP Block Captains and Coordinators to develop and strengthen neighborhood activities and events, including annual awards dinner.
    • Maintain partner relationships internally at BPHC and with external stakeholders/partners.
    • Ensure training content and engagement practices are trauma-informed and rooted in racial equity.
    • Co-facilitate Division- and Bureau-wide Working Groups, special projects, etc., as requested.
    • Maintain thorough communication with city agencies, businesses, community-based organizations, and faith-based organizations on services they provide in the community.
    • Assist BPHC staff as well as coalitions in data collection, focus groups, needs/assets assessments, planning, etc.
    • Attend VIP coalition meetings, events, and organization-based networking meetings throughout the designated VIP areas.
    • Develop and promote the VIP newsletter.
    • Works in a confidential capacity. Operates independently. Uses independent judgment and discretion to make decisions affecting the department and staff as it relates to unit operations/services and BPHC policy. Make and recommend management and personnel decisions for, including but not limited to promotion, transfer and assignment of staff, and imposition of discipline.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's and three years of related experience required OR seven years relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
    • Experience developing and implementing youth leadership development and community organizing programming.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse racial/ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, and LGBTQ populations.
    • Knowledge of the impact of structural and institutional racism, other forms of structural violence and inequities.
    • Candidate must have strong interpersonal skills including ability to practice self-reflection, give and receive constructive feedback, and work well with professionals, paraprofessionals, youth and adult residents.
    • Knowledge of the City of Boston, its resources and organization.
    • Ability to set up data collection systems, and to analyze and interpret data.
    • Ability to clearly communicate with multiple partners and write clear, concise reports.
    • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software. Social media expertise is a plus.
    • Bilingual/bicultural applicants strongly encouraged.

    • This position requires direct client/patient contact and as a result of such direct contact, certain immunizations will be recommended and/or required prior to commencement of employment duties.
