    Description

    Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Unirondack’s finances, fundraising, leadership staff, facilities, and execution of its mission.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    The ED will be thoroughly committed to Unirondack’s mission. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

    • 2 years of senior management experience; track record of effective leadership in a camp or conference center or similar non-profit organization
    • Experience in organizational management with the ability to design policies and procedures that help staff members do their job successfully
    • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
    • Experience with marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
    • A commitment to empowerment of youth, compassion in daily interactions, and the development of an accepting and welcoming community
    • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Organization Development, or related applicable experience
    • Experience in budget development, daily financial management, and accounting practices
    • Experience hiring and developing new teams of staff in an organization
    • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed

    Primary Responsibilities

    Leadership & Management:

    • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence; rigorous program evaluation; and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems. Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals
    • Actively engage and communicate with the Unirondack community, including campers, camper families, volunteers, board members, event planners, alumni, UU congregations, and donors
    • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction and fundraising
    • Lead, coach, develop, evaluate, and retain Unirondack’s Leadership team. Maintain effective systems to ensure successful operation of the camp. Regularly evaluate program components in order to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other stakeholders

    Financial Management:

    • Maintain the financial and tax records of Unirondack
    • Maintain and follow standard procedures for the paying of bills, invoicing and payment of fees, filing of required governmental reports, insurance coverage, and engagement of outside contractors
    • Maintain record of donations
    • Prepare and manage a yearly budget in coordination with the Board of Directors

    Fundraising & Communications:

    • Expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and support the board in fundraising for the Foundation Campaign
    • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications and publicity, including maintaining an active web presence and developing engaging written materials
    • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities
    • Prepare reports on Unirondack for the Membership, the Board, and others as needed

    Planning & New Business:

    • Support the Spring/Fall Manager and the Camp Director in developing new programs
    • Begin to build partnerships with other UU Camps and Conference Centers and other organizations that share our values
    • Be an external local and national presence that publishes and communicates our program results with an emphasis on the successes of the Unirondack program
