    Description

    YEMBA is a 501(c)3 organization that provides holistic developmental support to middle school and high school youth in the Oak Park area through a continuum of mentorship services. Our program is designed to educate youth mentally, physically and spiritually – equipping them with the knowledge and tools for community leadership and success.

    Job Summary

    The Recreational Coach (RC) will be responsible for designing and leading sports curriculum and overseeing program implementation. The ideal candidate for the RC position will be responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating sports curriculum during afterschool programming for student participants ages 11-18. The RC works extensively with the Mentors, Junior Mentors and Program Managers to engage youth and families while educating the community about the program and its benefits.

    Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise one to three Junior Mentors (High School Students)

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Provide appropriate grade-level instruction for basketball, sports, and team-building activities
    • Work with Program Managers, Mentors, and Junior Mentors to maintain behavior expectations
    • Enforce rules of schools/recreational facilities in order to maintain discipline and ensure safety
    • Provide modified activities based on student need (physical, behavioral, emotional)
    • Coordinate seasonal recreation leagues for basketball
    • Demonstrate use of materials and equipment to encouraging participation
    • Organize and set up equipment for recreational activities
    • Update and complete appropriate forms and inventory lists
    • Administer basic first aid if needed

    Development & Training

    • Evaluate sports curriculum on a regular basis to determine quality, identifying areas for improvement to achieve desired result
    • Maintain knowledge current in the field but not limited to, participation in coursework, seminars, training, and workshops
    • Ensure all Junior. Mentors update program attendance and activity data
    • Attend all staff meetings and events as required

    Fundraising

    • Participate in YEMBA fundraising events
    • Encourage and recruit program participants to be YEMBA ambassadors at fundraising events
    • Note: Job duties listed above represent the major responsibilities for the job. Each specific position within a job title may require additional duties, processes, skills or assignments. Other duties are assigned on an as needed basis and may require additional skills and competences.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma, Bachelor’s degree preferred
    • Minimum two years experience working with youth 11-18 years of age in a human service setting, social service setting, or related field
    • Have a love of sports and desire to coach / mentor youth
    • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
    • Maintain respectful and appropriate relationships with program participants, all levels of organization staff and the various publics of the organization, demonstrating sensitivity to all ethnic, racial, gender and economic backgrounds and identities
    • Strong Leadership and Organizational Skills
    • CPR and First Aid Training Certification (can be acquired during training)
    • Microsoft Office
    • Google Suite
