    About OCCRP

With staff across six continents and hubs in Washington, D.C., Amsterdam, and Sarajevo, OCCRP is one of the largest investigative journalism organizations in the world. We are a nonprofit, mission-driven newsroom that partners with other media outlets to publish stories that spur action. OCCRP is also a media development platform that advances investigative reporting worldwide.

Our mission is to spread and strengthen investigative journalism around the world and expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. Our work has three main pillars: We collaborate with investigative journalists to publish hard-hitting stories that spark change; we provide training, tools, and infrastructure so nonprofit media outlets can thrive; and we develop technology and innovations that advance the entire industry.

    Position overview:

OCCRP is seeking a research & data fellow to support local reporters and the wider OCCRP network, specifically with information from Cyprus.

You will be part of a team of researchers and data experts who use a combination of commercial search engines, coding skills and databases, as well as publicly available open sources, to help journalists track down people, companies, and assets anywhere in the world and develop bespoke data analysis solutions for projects.

The applicants should love research, be interested in data, and be eager to learn from seasoned professionals. This is an ideal role if you are interested in building your skills as a journalist or OSINT researcher and would like to understand the process behind hard hitting investigative projects.

    Job description

    Responsibilities include:

    • Locating and obtaining public records in Cyprus, and around the world, if necessary
    • Running extensive background checks on people, companies, and their networks
    • Contributing to reports on research findings to be shared with journalists in the OCCRP network
    • Identifying ways to obtain information from new sources and countries

    Person Description

    Required Skills:

    • Proficiency in English and Greek, written and spoken
    • Familiarity with the political landscape in Cyprus
    • Ability to work well with people from a range of countries, languages and backgrounds, online and in person
    • Ability to express ideas in a clear and concise manner
    • Persistence and curiosity — you should be someone who enjoys looking for needles in a haystack
    • Thoroughness and strong attention to detail
    • Highly organized with ability to efficiently structure information
    • Ability to work independently, while asking for guidance when needed
    • Computer literacy, with experience using Word, Excel, and Google Docs

    Desirable Skills:

    • Completed or ongoing education in research, journalism, law or finance
    • Basic understanding of how to obtain public records
    • Basic knowledge of data wrangling and analysis
    • Understanding of how to track movement and ownership of ships and planes
