With a 50-plus year history of advocacy and service, this position is essential to the ongoing success of the organization and the movement. In these challenging times politically and culturally, PFLAG remains at the forefront of crucial and consequential impact for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.

    Since its founding in 1973, PFLAG has worked every day to fight for an equitable, inclusive world where every LGBTQ+ person is safe, celebrated, empowered and loved. PFLAG National has over 550,000 members and supporters and over 350 chapters in the United States. This vast grassroots network is led by the Chief Executive Officer, and cultivated, resourced, and serviced by the PFLAG National staff, Board of Directors, and Regional Directors Council. Currently, PFLAG National has a staff capacity of 30 FTEs who reside in Washington DC and ten states; over half of these work fully remote from its headquarters. PFLAG National has a labor agreement with the OPEIU Local 2, AFL-CIO and has a favorable relationship with its employees.

    Position:

    PFLAG National is seeking a dynamic, experienced and growth-minded individual to serve as its Chief Operating Officer. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the ongoing management and coordination of work across all departments at PFLAG National, in partnership with the CEO.

    This individual will be a phenomenal and proven leader of teams who thrives in an environment where mission-driven work is key. They will relish the opportunity to learn from their colleagues and mentor and guide leaders of different departments to greater success and to problem-solve. Humility, curiosity, empathy, and exceptional interpersonal communication skills will be central to the success of this role. They will also have the ability to not only keep an eye on the vision of the organization, but also have a direct role in setting that vision for the years to come.

    Key Responsibilities:

    This senior leader will oversee all seven departments of PFLAG National: Chapter Engagement & Communities Engagement, Development & Philanthropic Partnerships, Strategic Communications & External Relations, Administration & Finance, Learning & Inclusion, Policy & Government Affairs, and Advocacy. Below is an estimated representation of how this person will divide their time.

    Management, Mentorship, and Collaboration (50%)

    • Work closely with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure high-level impact, long-term strategy, and organizational effectiveness
    • Supervise and mentor department leads to empower them in their management and facilitation of cross departmental strategy and ensure they have what they need to get their jobs done in an efficient manner
    • Facilitate clear communications and collaboration across departments for maximum organizational effectiveness
    • Serve as the head of the Leadership Team’s regular meetings as well as conduct and manage the full staff meetings
    • Advise the CEO in matters of programming, staffing, and external affairs
    • Model and incorporate organizational values, policies and culture within the Leadership Team

    Human Capital, Infrastructure & Nonprofit Compliance (30%)

    • Evaluate, refine, implement and collaboratively use organizational and project management tools and processes to enable productivity and compliance with regulatory requirements
    • With the Leadership Team, attract, develop and retain a team of people who are aligned with PFLAG’s mission and seek solutions and outcomes that advance it
    • Oversee the development of the annual budget; recurring tracking and reporting; and stewardship of the investment of its reserve capital
    • Working with the Leadership team, create and implement a culturally competent and growth-responsive HR and human capital program

    Strategy and Public-Facing Work (20%)

    • Work closely with the CEO and the Leadership Team to create a long-term strategy and tactics with measurable effectiveness of its progress toward its vision and prudent deployment of its resources
    • Engage effectively with the Board of Directors and Regional Directors Council by providing transparent, accurate and timely reports on behalf of the CEO as assigned
    • Working with the Leadership Team, assist in devising and executing externally facing outreach and programmatic initiatives
    • Serve as an exceptional relationship builder, increasing rapport, trust, and transparency across a diverse and growing community of robust, passionate, talented stakeholders, including staff, funders, supporters, and allied organizations.

    Key Skills and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
    • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in a nonprofit setting and a demonstrated success in achieving true collaboration among teams in a matrixed organization
    • 7+ years experience in having directly supervised staff at all levels of the organization, including those who are not direct reports
    • Knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion practices; and civil rights as a whole
    • Enthusiastic support of PFLAG’s strategic vision, mission, and goals
    • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and management skills
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability working with remote employees
    • Demonstrated success in team leadership and management
    • Must be able to effectively interact with all levels of personnel both internally and externally to the organization
    • Direct experience managing and overseeing organizational budgets
    • Experience in managing consultants, external advisors or vendors
    • This is a hybrid position for staff based in the Washington, DC or DMV area requiring 3 days per week in the DC office; and
    • Must be able and willing to travel as needed

    This position is not part of a bargaining unit.

    Salary: Salary range is $160,000-$185,000, commensurate with experience, expertise and other qualifying factors.

    Position Type and Work Hours: This is a full-time role, typically Mon-Fri, 8 hours per day; must be able to work longer hours and on weekends as necessary. Occasional local and/or domestic travel. This is a hybrid position, requiring 3 days per week in the DC office.
