    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Advocate/Transitional Housing Coordinator is part of a team of staff members that works on a day-to-day basis to implement Manavi’s goal of empowering South Asian survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence. This position’s primary responsibilities include providing peer support counseling, crisis intervention, information, and referrals to survivors, and advocating for survivors by taking a survivor-centered approach. The Advocate ensures the smooth overall operation of Manavi’s safe house, Ashiana, which involves maintaining a safe, comfortable, accessible and inclusive environment for the survivors residing there. This position is full-time and reports directly to the Executive Director.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    Applicants with a Master’s in Social Work or a related field will be given preference; however, those with a Bachelor’s or certifications in a related field, or with equivalent combination of work experience with Domestic Violence will also be considered. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in trauma-informed work, and experience providing survivor-centered support to those experiencing trauma and crisis. The candidate must be organized, interested in working with individuals and diverse communities, and a self-motivated worker. The candidate must have 40 hours of Domestic Violence Response Training (DVRT) as required by the state of New Jersey or must be willing to complete this training within 6 months of hire. The candidate must also have 20 hours of training in South Asian cultural issues provided by Manavi. Ideally, the applicant would also have an understanding of the impact of domestic violence on survivors, and an interest in social justice work. Demonstrable writing, organizing, and computer skills as well as public speaking experience are added qualifications.

    The Advocate/Transitional Housing Coordinator will be responsible for making weekly trips to the safe house, so a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is a must. This position requires flexibility in work hours, including some evening and weekend work. Some out-of-state travel and training work may be involved. Lived experience with South Asian culture and identity is important, and proficiency in at least one South Asian language is preferred (Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, etc.)

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Provide trauma-informed supportive counseling and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
    • Provide culturally specific and linguistically appropriate services to survivors of violence including, interpretation, support groups, information and referrals, advocacy, crisis intervention, and community outreach
    • Fulfill all grant deliverables, including, economic empowerment program enrollment and grant reporting
    • Assist residential survivors with their needs including ensuring physical/emotional wellness
    • Connect survivors with government programs, job centers, community-based and other organizations
    • Represent Manavi at conferences, events, and panel discussions as needed
    • Help coordinate and participate in organizational events such as annual gala and other Manavi events
    • Share in administrative duties, such as record keeping and other duties as assigned by Executive Director
