Our programs and initiatives increase an understanding of the principles, values, institutions, and history of constitutional democracy among teachers, students, and the general public. The Center is embarking on a visionary expansion to advance civic and constitutional education, addressing the critical needs of today while building a foundation for impactful civic learning in the decades ahead.

    Position Summary:

    Reporting to the Senior Manager of National Programs and Professional Development, the Manager of Curriculum and Civic Learning Events will lead the development, implementation, and scaling of innovative civic education curricular and professional learning (PL) materials for the Center’s flagship program, Project Citizen. A key focus will be integrating social and emotional learning supports (SEL) into the curricular program. The Manager will collaborate with educators, state program coordinators, and communities—particularly underserved populations—to ensure equitable access to high-quality civic education. Working with the Center’s Core Programs Team, the Manager will apply creativity, innovation, and a lens towards accessibility to enhance and expand programs that engage civic education leaders, educators, and students nationwide. This role will ensure that the Center continues to empower educators and students to become active, informed participants in their communities through Project Citizen and We the People.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Educator engagement and collaboration
      • Collaborate with evaluation partners to analyze a nationwide survey, identifying challenges, curricular needs, and equity concerns related to civic education and SEL, and develop actionable strategies to address them
      • Collaborate with teachers, SEL experts, and underserved communities to ensure curriculum and PL initiatives address identified needs effective
    • Curriculum Design and Development
      • Lead the co-creation of SEL-aligned lesson plans to support our flagship programming, as well as educator support materials through workshops with experienced teachers and SEL experts
      • Oversee a review and revision process to ensure lessons and resources align with culturally responsive pedagogies and Civic SEL principles
    • Professional Learning Leadership and Dissemination
      • Plan and facilitate impactful PL experiences for pilot teachers, mentor teachers, and state coordinators, including multi-year programs such as pilot initiatives, summer institutes, and follow-up sessions to scale efforts nationally
      • Support educators in engaging underserved students by leveraging asset mapping, needs assessments, and customized instructional strategies that address unique classroom and community needs
      • Guide the implementation of Project Citizen instruction by integrating SEL practices to re-engage marginalized students and foster meaningful civic participation
    • Evaluation and National Events Management
      • Facilitate the collection of data from pilot programs to refine curriculum and materials
      • In collaboration with state partners, facilitate the coordination of local and state Project Citizen showcases, ensuring students from diverse backgrounds can present their projects to peers, community leaders, and policymakers
      • Support coordination and management of national civic education competitions and showcases
    • Center Programs Mission and Vision
      • Set ambitious goals for relevant programs
      • Contribute ideas to the fulfillment of the Center’s Mission
      • Present program information and results to K-12 educators, civil society leaders, and other partners and stakeholders through meetings, reports, and other methods.
      • Develop, review, and edit informational and promotional materials including print, media, and social for Center programs
    • Grant Management
      • Collaborates with the Grants team at the Center in managing subawards
      • Collaborate with the Programs and Grants teams as well as state partners for creation of sustainable civic education programs.

    Qualifications, Experiences, and Skill

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, Social Studies, Curriculum Development, Civic Education, or related field
    • At least 5 years of experience in K-12 social studies teaching and certification
    • Experience in curriculum design and instructional strategies, particularly in Civic Education
    • Proven ability to develop and deliver PL programs for educators
    • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education
    • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to oversee complex, multi-phase projects
    • Experience with large scale / national event planning and management
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders to achieve shared goals
    • Travel for professional learning events, showcases, or conferences

    Preferred:

    • Master’s degree in Education, Curriculum Development, or related field
    • Familiarity with Project Citizen and SEL pedagogies
    • Experience working with underserved student populations and culturally responsive teaching
    • Proficiency in data collection and evaluation for program improvement
    • Effective public speaking skills, with the ability to present to diverse audiences, including educators, policymakers, and civic leaders

    Terms of Employment:

    This is a full-time, salaried position. Occasional weekend and evening work and travel may be required. The Center operates under a hybrid/remote, flexible work status that is subject to change. The position is primarily funded by a program grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which is expected to continue through December 2027. Continuing employment at the Center is contingent upon funding availability.

    This position requires the successful completion of a probationary period of six (6) months of continuous service at full time (35 hours per week), without a break in service. An employee serving a probationary period may be released at any time at the discretion of The Center for Civic Education.

    The Center for Civic Education is an at-will employer. This means that either the Center or the employee may terminate employment at any time, with or without cause or prior notice. This status cannot be changed except in writing signed by the President.

    Salary:

    Competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Pay periods are semi-monthly. The Center offers a very competitive benefits package, including a generous retirement plan, optional additional retirement plan, medical and dental insurance, vacation time, sick leave, sixteen holidays per year, and additional optional benefit
