    Description

    Chief Development Officer

    Inside Climate News is seeking to hire a Chief Development Officer to help lead ICN’s development team, reporting to the founder and publisher. The CDO will be responsible for sustaining existing donor support and securing the next level of expansion and growth, and preparing the ground for a capital campaign. This is a new and high-profile position being created at a moment of great momentum for the organization, and also at a time of growing threats to both journalism and environmental protection.

    Job Description

    The CDO will work closely with the publisher and the development team and oversee and grow revenue generation across all channels, including foundations, major donors and small donors, and develop new initiatives in keeping with ICN’s ethos and strategic imperatives. The CDO will also have a public-facing role, representing the organization in person at select conferences and meetings, and remotely; as well as interfacing with ICN Board members. Success in this position will be demonstrated by raising significant funds to support existing operations and advance development projects.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in fundraising, business development and project management, with a demonstrable track record of success
    • Highly-developed writing, editing and communications abilities
    • Fluency with spreadsheets and financial management
    • Well-developed emotional and inter-personal intelligence
    • A collegial and supportive, calm and collaborative style of leadership a must

    Founded in 2007, Inside Climate News is an independent, nonprofit, non-partisan news organization covering the biggest crisis facing our planet. With 35 full-time staff members and growing, we operate one of the largest and most influential environmental newsrooms in the country.

    We have a nucleus in New York, a presence in Washington D.C., and staff working from California to Florida, in Texas, Alabama and Kentucky, Colorado, Ohio and Massachusetts. Good ideas propel the operation, wherever they originate.

    As part of its work in the public interest, ICN is establishing a collaborative national reporting network, strengthening the practice of climate and environmental justice journalism and training the next generation of journalists.

    We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting (2013) and recognition as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (2016).

    Compensation

    Salary range: $150,000-$175,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance plans; 401k matching; and generous paid time off.
