    Description

    Position Summary

    The Substitute Environmental Educator plays a key role in delivering FoLAR’s award-winning environmental education programming on an as-needed basis. This position involves leading engaging, hands-on field trips for K-12 students at the Los Angeles River and supporting community events.

    This role is flexible and ideal for individuals passionate about outdoor education and fostering environmental stewardship in diverse communities across Los Angeles. Work will be offered based on an as-needs-basis and is subject to the Substitute Environmental Educator’s availability for scheduling.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Deliver eco-education programming for K-12 students through FoLAR’s Source to Sea LA River field trips.
    • Lead hands-on, STEAM-based activities that align with FoLAR’s curriculum and educational goals.
    • Collaborate with FoLAR’s Education Team to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
    • Support remote or administrative tasks on an as-needed basis.
    • Represent FoLAR professionally in interactions with students, teachers, and community members.

    Qualifications

    • Experience working with K-12 students in educational, outdoor, or interpretive settings.
    • Knowledge of environmental issues, ecology, or community-based education preferred.
    • Availability during school hours (Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM) and occasional weekends.
    • Reliable transportation to various Los Angeles River locations and schools across LA County.
    • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and participate in field trip setup tasks.
    • Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
