Who We Are

The Mountaineers is a community of outdoor recreationists and conservationists founded in 1906 to explore the peaks and waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Today, we have more than 16,000 members and seven branches in Western Washington, where we deliver most of our outdoor education programming. Thanks to the work of generations of volunteers and our internationally recognized publishing division, we continue to enjoy an outstanding reputation in the fields of outdoor education, recreation, and public lands conservation and advocacy.

Position Overview

The Olympia Day Camp Program Coordinator is the inspirational staff leader, organizational mastermind, and purveyor of all things camp at our Olympia location. They are primarily responsible for the safe and effective execution of educational and recreational programming for Mountaineers Olympia Day Camp. They will lead camp staff in creating an inclusive and welcoming camp environment. This includes facilitating large group programs and field trips; taking the initiative to go above and beyond; and managing the upkeep of the facility throughout each week of camp.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee, organize, and support programmatic camp elements such as group programs, field trip days, waterfront activity, and transportation.
• Create a positive, enthusiastic, supportive, professional environment for staff, volunteers, and campers.
• Ensure The Mountaineers youth policies and procedures are always followed and adhered to.
• Act as a mentor and point of contact person for staff and volunteers.
• Facilitating check-in and check-out
• Assist the Director in running all-camp activities daily
• Providing an additional leadership presence throughout the camp day
• Providing excellent customer service to camp families
• Maintaining a daily schedule and checking with camp groups.
• Provide outdoor instruction for campers (i.e., hiking, swimming, etc.)
• Assist Associate Camps Program Manager in developing all-camp programs, activities, and educational curriculum.

Requirements

• Minimum age 21.
• Cultural humility and desire to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds.
• Experience working with youth
• Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check
• Ability to drive a 12-passenger van
• Ability to travel to offsite programs
• Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Must have (and maintain) an acceptable driving record to drive Mountaineers vehicles.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to details
• Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and relationship-building skills
• Flexibility and adaptability when things don’t go as planned
• Positive attitude and ability to carry oneself in a professional manner to create positive experiences

Desired Qualifications

• Summer camp experience, or comparable experience working with 8-16 year olds in single day or overnight settings
• Experience teaching outdoor recreation skills such as hiking, backpacking, climbing, first aid, navigation, outdoor cooking, naturalist skills, teambuilding, or photography.
• Experience managing a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Current First Aid & CPR certification or willingness to obtain

Work Environment

This role is based in Olympia, WA at Olympia Friends Meeting House and some training and programming may occur offsite throughout the summer.

Physical Demands

• Ability to work and manage a flexible schedule, including evening hours, as necessary
• Ability to life and move 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 occasionally
• Ability to be outside and active for extended periods of time, in a variety of weather conditions.
• Ability to bend, squat, run, or climb as part of duties leading youth; ability to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to 8 miles.
