    Job Summary:

    TGIJP Black Trans Cultural Center seeks Staff Attorney who is a member of the California State Bar.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Support TGIJP clients by providing legal information, resources, and limited representation to address client housing issues.
    • Collaborate with TGIJP’s housing and re-entry departments, as well as with other local organizations, to pursue creative solutions to client housing needs.
    • Provide support for direct actions when TGIJP members will be involved, provide legal information to TGIJP members and ally organizer planning actions, organize legal support for actions.
    • Occasionally co-counsel with volunteer and pro-bono attorneys in litigating housing cases, conduct legal research, draft and edit briefs.
    • Create know your rights materials and self help resources.
    • Engage in direct legal representation on name and gender marker updates in regular clinics.
    • Engage in education for community members and attorneys by speaking at conferences, trainings and webinars.
    • Supervise the legal case managers, Interns, and volunteers
    • Other duties as assigned
    • All staff at TGIJP are expected to provide support to clients, members, and fellow staff who have experienced incarceration

    Required Qualifications:

    • Active membership in the California Bar
    • At least two years or more of experience practicing law
    • Extensive experience with legal advocacy relating to housing in California. Comfort in being an organization’s primary housing law expert.
    • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write clearly and speak in public. Passion, creativity, professionalism and good judgment. Enthusiasm for TGIJP's work and a passionate belief in the leadership of Black transgender women.
    • Demonstrated awareness of a commitment to a broad range of social, racial, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TGIJP represents (emphasis on currently and formerly incarcerated TGI population).

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with San Francisco rental ordinances.
    • Experience working in coalitions and experience working with pro-bono attorneys and advocates.
    • Experience in community organizing.
