    Position Title: Lead Class Teacher, Grade 1

    Location: Brooklyn Waldorf School

    Employment Type: Full-Time

    Position Overview:

    The Lead Class Teacher, Grade 1, at the Brooklyn Waldorf School is a vital member of our educational team, responsible for guiding young learners through their academic, social, and emotional development in alignment with Waldorf pedagogy. In this role, you will plan and deliver engaging main lessons and skills classes, foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, and collaborate with colleagues to create a vibrant community life. You will contribute to the school’s success by inspiring a love of learning, cultivating equity in the curriculum, and building strong relationships with students, parents, and faculty.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Classroom Instruction:

    • Plan and deliver main lessons that are engaging and thoughtful, integrating traditional Waldorf topics with attentiveness to equity issues in both the curriculum and the classroom.
    • Plan and deliver skills classes to support foundational understanding in writing, reading, math, and art.
    • Adapt and differentiate teaching styles to meet the needs and interests of students in collaboration with the learning support team.

    Collaboration and Community Engagement:

    • Collaborate with other class and specialty teachers to support curriculum integration and community life, including holidays and festivals.
    • Direct and produce a class play each year to foster creativity and collaboration among students.

    Teacher Expectations:

    • Be available to parents for collaboration on student needs, including parent evenings and biannual parent-teacher conferences.
    • Attend weekly faculty meetings and occasional special events such as open houses, festivals, and fairs.
    • Assist in school governance by serving on at least two committees relevant to grade, interest, and expertise (after the first year).
    • Commit to leading the class through multiple grades.
    • Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
    • Comply with the school’s established policies and procedures as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.

    Teacher Requirements:

    • A Bachelor’s degree and prior teaching experience.
    • Previous Waldorf training or a willingness to take Waldorf courses within the first few years of employment (professional development funding is available to partially offset associated costs).
    • Strong classroom management skills.
    • Physical ability to sit, stand, and walk for significant periods of time and frequently use staircases.
    • Musical and artistic ability is preferred but not required

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Employment Type: Full-Time Faculty, yearly employment agreement.
    • Salary: $60-65k; Competitive and commensurate with experience, non-exempt.
