    What You’ll Do

    Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Finance/Controller is the key leader overseeing the organization’s financial operations and executing fiscal and growth strategies. This role blends expertise in general accounting, grant accounting, pass-through funds, financial planning and analysis, and business operations to ensure the organization’s financial health, compliance, and sustainability.

    The Director of Finance/Controller will oversee accounting and financial planning and analysis functions, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and supporting programmatic and grant pass-through funding needs, and ensuring financial systems are in place to support growth. This individual will also collaborate with senior leadership to integrate finance with development, contract management, human resources, IT, and regional operations to drive organizational success.

    Accounting Leadership

    • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
    • Provide oversight of grant accounting, pass-through fund distribution, compliance with funder and subaward requirements and monitoring subrecipients.
    • Develop and maintain internal controls for the receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and expenditures.
    • Manage cash flow and oversee financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Coordinate and lead annual audit activities, ensuring timely filing of all tax returns and compliance with donor regulations.
    • In partnership with our Development team, ensure oversight and alignment with grant budgets and reporting.
    • Oversee financial systems and payroll, including allocations across programs and funding sources.

    Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A)

    • Lead the annual budgeting process and liaise directly with budget managers during goal-setting and resourcing.
    • Provide a budget to actuals variance analyses to identify trends and recommend adjustments.
    • Partner with program leaders to align financial planning with program goals and ensure the financial efficacy of operations.
    • Prepare forecasts and financial models, providing strategic insights for decision-making.
    • Prepare and effectively codify and create reporting outlining financial information required for senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and finance/audit committees.

    Team Leadership and Collaboration

    • Supervise and develop accounting and finance staff, clarifying roles and responsibilities and fostering a culture of collaboration and growth.
    • Partner with Development, HR, Ops, and IT teams to integrate financial processes with other systems and improve organizational efficiency.
    • Partner with the Development team to ensure revenue tracking shifts and projections align with related systems with revenue forecasting and budgeting.
    • Partner with Operations teams on state registrations, compliance reporting, and filings.
    • Educate program leaders and staff on financial procedures and explore ways finance can better support organizational operations.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business management (CPA/Masters or equivalent).
    • 10+ years of experience in accounting, financial management, and strategic planning, ideally within a nonprofit organization.
    • Strong expertise in GAAP, audits, compliance, and nonprofit grant accounting.
    • Proven track record in managing state and foundation grant reporting, pass-throughs, and compliance.
    • Proven ability to lead budgeting, financial planning, and variance analysis processes.
    • Experience managing reporting, general ledger, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and investments.
    • Technology-savvy with expertise in enhancing and implementing systems (e.g., Sage Intacct preferred, FP&A budgeting and planning, e.g., Martus or Adaptive Planning) and advanced Excel skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

    • Strategic thinker with exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

    Compensation and Benefits

    The compensation range for this position is between $150-$170K, and salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's specific qualifications, years of relevant experience, specialized knowledge, and internal equity. Teach Plus offers a benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 3% matching 401k plan, disability and life insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts for medical and childcare expenses. Teach Plus offers generous time off benefits, including 15 vacation days, 3 personal days, 5 sick days, 11 holidays, and winter break. Additionally, Teach Plus offers paid parental leave and a 4-week paid sabbatical for every five years of service.
