    Description

    The role of MRC’s Medicaid Expansion Organizer is to support MS Health Advocacy Program's Care4Mississippi (www.care4mississippi.org) project in the South MS region through planning and executing community engagement and base-building strategies to include, but not limited to: relationship building, community organizing, event planning, story collection and multi-media communications. The goal of the Organizer’s work is to expand Care4Mississippi coalition membership and participation in the South MS region, ensuring the project is achieving the intended goals and outcomes, and providing periodic reports to MHAP and MRC Board of Directors.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the project and work closely with MHAP and Care4Mississippi project staff.
    • Provide information on the political landscape and environment of South Mississippi to MHAP.
    • Community Outreach, Organizing and Education, to include but not limited to:
    • Cultivate relationships with community members, organizations & stakeholders in South MS
    • Develop and implement organizing strategies to recruit, sustain, and actively involve community members in South Mississippi.
    • Assist in building coalition membership and participation from community-based orgs, community members, business owners, faith leaders, etc.
    • Assist in building a network of community supporters and advocates in South Mississippi.
    • Assist in building a network of community supporters and advocates in the SouthMississippi small business community.
    • Monitor local and national trends to identify opportunities for engagement.
    • In partnership with MHAP, Plan and convene (3) community events that attract and educate audiences on the benefits of Medicaid Expansion, effects of work reporting requirements, Medicaid defense, and general information about the Medicaid program.
    • Share and disseminate MHAP materials and updates across MRC’s social platforms,networks, etc.
    • Target communication relative to the established policy agenda, community-based education, collaborative civic engagement activities, and engaging with policymakers.
    • Assist in recruiting southern Mississippi storytellers in the Medicaid Coverage Gap or Medicaid program

    Additional Responsibilities: `

    • Represent MRC in Care4Mississippi Coalition meetings
    • Respond to requests and inquiries with direct communication
    • Report regularly to the MRC Board of Directors with progress toward deliverables

    Impact Measures:

    • Number of convenings/events, percentage of membership consistently engaged, action items presented and implemented as a result of convenings.
    • Increase in Care4MS south Mississippi membership.
    • Outreach enrollment efforts (New members, number and available demographics, social media, print media, radio & television, press conferences, website, etc.)
    • Dissemination of infographics, flyers, press releases, etc.)
    • Collection of consumer/gap stories an informed and activated base of frontline organizations and communities in Mississippi around climate and environmental justice issues.

    Skills & Experience:

    • 3-5 years of community organizing experience working directly with racially, ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse people and communities
    • Commitment to advancing health equity and healthy communities
    • Very strong organizational skills with attention to detail
    • Flexible, able to adjust to changing priorities
    • Demonstrated ability to co-create inclusive and participatory processes of agenda setting, meeting facilitation, and strategy development
    • Demonstrated ability to create short to long-term work planning process
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
    • Commitment to the U.S. South as a strategic terrain with significant movement history and context, locally, nationally, and globally
    • Excellent coordination and administrative skills
    • Excellent verbal communication skills
    • Knowledge and experience using calendaring software, email, social media, Google Drive applications, Zoom and other digital tools for coordination and communication
