    Description

    Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) fights for the legal and political rights of transgender people in America. Leveraging decades of experience on the frontlines of power, we shift government and society towards a future where we are no less than equal. A4TE was founded in 2024 as the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF), two long-time champions for the trans community, merged together as one organization. A4TE builds on their successes to boldly imagine a world where trans people live our lives joyfully and without barriers. In a time of increased extremism against trans people and our allies, protecting and expanding our freedom to be who we are has never been more important.

    Position Overview

    This is an opportunity to play a role in our nation’s movement for transgender rights. Summer legal interns will assist the impact litigation, Trans Health Project, and Name Change Project legal teams with legal research and writing, direct representation, policy advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, and client intake. Summer Legal interns can select a preference from among our three program areas; however, the internship will comprise at least some work in each. The summer internship is a ten-week, full-time position. The internship is remote and interns may work from anywhere.

    Responsibilities

    • Assisting in the drafting of pleadings, memoranda of law, demand letters, negotiation materials, and health insurance appeals;
    • Conducting client intake and meeting with clients;
    • Researching legal questions and drafting memoranda for existing and potential cases;
    • Researching and drafting policy advocacy documents;
    • Researching and drafting materials for public education; and
    • Compiling legal information and referral resources.

    Qualifications

    • Enrolled in law school;
    • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills;
    • Highest levels of initiative, creativity, and good judgment;
    • Well-organized, self-directed, and able to complete multiple tasks in a timely and efficient manner;
    • A commitment to actively working in alignment with other social, racial, and economic justice movements;
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work;
    • Ability to work independently with little supervision;
    • Experience with or commitment to serving transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people; and,
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

    Compensation

    Interns are encouraged to seek out and apply for grants from their school or other sources, and A4TE will assist with requesting course credit where available. In order to make internships more accessible, A4TE will offer a stipend of $17 per hour to interns who are unable to secure external funding or school credit.

    To Apply

    Submit a cover letter, resume, and under-ten-page writing sample as attachments to our application page. Students are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible, as decisions are made on a rolling basis. No phone calls, please.
