    About OneWorld Now!

OneWorld Now! (OWN) is a nonprofit with over 20 years of experience providing inclusive and accessible international education for high school students. As part of our after-school or summer program, students can earn high school world language and elective credit by studying Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, or Russian. They can also opt to participate in credit-bearing Leadership workshops and apply to study abroad in a range of countries.

OWN prioritizes the determined high school students who are historically marginalized by education systems, especially those coming from communities of color, communities new to the U.S., and communities facing economic hardship. They join class in person and online, from Seattle and across the continent.

OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all youth have access to transformative international education opportunities. To help ensure this, all OneWorld Now! programs are priced on a sliding scale based on family size and income.

OneWorld Now! is committed to being an anti-racist organization and to supporting our youth, staff, and community in our collective, ongoing learning of how we can dismantle all systems of oppression.

    About the Role

OneWorld Now! is seeking three energetic, organized, and dedicated individuals to join our program as an Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, or Russian Teaching Intern for our OWN-STARTALK Global Citizen Summer Language Program.

Whether you are a native, heritage, or second language speaker of one of these languages, this is a chance to share the language and culture you love with high school students and learn from a team of experienced teachers in a highly rewarding environment.

You will assist an experienced teacher in their in-person language classroom, as well as design and lead culture sessions twice a week. Work will be in-person from July 7 to August 1.

    Minimum requirements:

    • Native, heritage, or second-language proficiency (Intermediate High or above on the ACTFL proficiency scale)
    • Professional working proficiency in English and strong written English skills
    • Interest in learning about best practices in language pedagogy
    • Interest in working with youth from diverse backgrounds, especially marginalized backgrounds
    • Commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive classroom environment
    • Adaptability, flexibility, and openness to feedback, learning, and growth
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
    • Be present in the location of the summer program from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday from July 7 to August 1, 2025
    • Have access to a laptop
    • Per current STARTALK program requirements, candidates must be a US citizen or permanent resident

    Preferred characteristics:

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following characteristics:

    • Demonstrated interest in pursuing education as a career path, whether in a world language or another field
    • Experience working with high school students in the United States, whether as a teacher or in another capacity such as tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or similar activities
    • Experience working with racially and economically diverse groups and marginalized communities, including immigrants and refugees, communities of color, working class communities, and LGBTQ+ populations

    Duties:

    • Assist in the in-person classroom at our summer program, including working with struggling students, facilitating small-group work, and helping students stay on-task
    • Design and lead culture lessons twice a week that merge an extracurricular activity with language learning (examples include calligraphy, cooking, martial arts, dancing, etc), and/or coordinate with guests to lead such sessions
    • Coordinating all necessary materials for cultural activities (purchasing them or ordering online through the OWN account; you will be reimbursed for any expenses you spend).
    • Take attendance and follow up with absent students and their guardian via text, phone call and/or email
    • Help supervising teacher with making copies and handouts for students
    • Help grade or assess student assignments
    • Support Leadership sessions twice a week with group management and technology needs
    • Coordinate with supervising teacher and Director of Languages, to provide student support
    • Help with logistics for summer program including setting up space, cleaning, serving lunches and other tasks
    • Help set up the rooms at school before summer camp. It will be a half-day dedicated to getting the classes ready.

    Commitment:

    8:30am to 4pm Pacific Time, Monday-Friday, July 7-August 1, 2025

Classes run from 9am-1pm Pacific Time. Outside of your time assisting in the classroom, plan to spend 2-3 hours per weekday planning or coordinating culture lessons, following up on absences and tardies, working with struggling students, or assisting your supervising teacher in other ways.

Expect to attend 6 hours of training in between Mid May and first week of June, days and times TBD.

    Compensation: $2,600.00 stipend

OneWorld Now! will provide an ORCA card for the four-week summer program or help with travel expenses up to $150.
