    Description

During COP28, for the first time, the Global Stocktake (GST) included an explicit objective to "transition away" from fossil fuels. However, the commitment lacks clear mechanisms, timelines and responsibilities, posing challenges for implementation. Furthermore, emerging economies reliant on fossil fuels view demands to halt extraction as inequitable, given the disparity between historical climate change contributions across different countries.

In response to these challenges, LINGO has developed a comprehensive toolbox outlining climate finance mechanisms that can be leveraged for Leave it in the Ground Incentive Deals (LIDs): financial incentives to support countries in keeping fossil fuels untapped while transitioning to more sustainable and equitable economies. We are now advocating for countries to incorporate commitments in their NDCs to keep fossil fuels in the ground through LIDs. Your role will be to participate in the following activities:

    • Map and analyze key stakeholders: Sort and filter government contacts relevant to LIDS.
    • Identify new candidate countries: Analyze climate policies and fossil fuel reserves to identify additional countries that could adopt a LIDS agreement.
    • Engage with government representatives: Reach out to country officials to advocate for the inclusion of LIDS in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and invite them to the Paris event.
    • Organize and lead strategic meetings: Prepare briefing materials, coordinate logistics, and facilitate discussions with government delegations.
    • Support the organization of events: Contribute to event planning, track country commitments, and structure outcomes to feed into COP30 negotiations.
    • Conduct strategic monitoring: Stay updated on climate negotiations, energy transition initiatives, and relevant climate finance mechanisms for LIDS.

    • Strong communication and negotiation skills: Comfortable interacting with government representatives and financial institutions.
    • Analytical and strategic thinking: Ability to identify opportunities, structure arguments, and draft strategic notes.
    • Languages: Fluency in English required; knowledge of French and/or Spanish is a plus.

    About LINGO

The Leave it in the Ground Initiative (LINGO) works at one of the most important fronts for stopping run-away climate change: keeping fossil fuels in the ground and transitioning to a 100% clean energy world. We develop high-impact, game-changing initiatives around coal, oil and gas extraction, in defense of a healthy planet.
