    The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) is a coalition of companies and trade associations that deploy clean energy and decarbonization solutions, with a sector focus on energy efficiency, natural gas, and renewable energy. Established in 1992, the coalition advocates at the federal level for policies that advance the deployment of a broad portfolio of clean energy technologies.

    About the Position

    The 2025 Jan Schori Summer Fellow will assist BCSE staff with policy research, communications, and event coordination. Qualified candidates should have interest in the business, sustainability, energy, and environment fields and/or communications and relevant experience through academic and/or previous internships or employment.

    The position will be based in BCSE’s office in Washington, DC. The fellowship will run approximately 6-8 weeks with 20-25 hours a week from the beginning of June to mid-August, depending on the Fellow’s academic schedule and Congressional calendar. A small stipend will be provided.

    The summer fellow will have the opportunity to:

      • Research current energy and climate change legislation and policies to support BCSE advocacy.
      • Gain knowledge of the operations of a trade association, from data management to external communications and policy advocacy.
      • Work with a small, collaborative, and highly experienced BCSE team.
      • Observe and interact with leading government relations executives in BCSE sectors.

    About Jan Schori

    The Fellowship was established in 2008 to honor Jan Schori upon her retirement as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the nation’s sixth largest publicly owned electric utility. Ms. Schori also served as the chair of BCSE’s Board of Directors. During her 14-year tenure as CEO, the utility earned a strong reputation for its renewable energy and energy efficiency programs as well as the national number one ranking in commercial customer satisfaction by JD Power & Associates. Prior to serving as CEO, Ms. Schori spent 15 years on the legal staff at SMUD, the last five as general counsel.

    Application Process
