    Background:

    Boscobel House and Gardens (Boscobel) is an historic house museum situated in Garrison, New York, within the Hudson Valley. It contains a notable collection of decorative arts and furniture from the Federal period. The Neoclassical mansion, constructed between 1804 and 1808, was preserved from demolition in the 1950s and has been carefully restored to its present-day splendor.

    The estate covers 68 acres and includes gardens, a woodland trail, and views of the Hudson River, overlooking Constitution Marsh and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Boscobel hosts various events, exhibitions, and programs throughout the year and serves as a cultural destination and educational resource for diverse audiences.

    The Position:

    Boscobel Restoration Inc. seeks a dynamic Chief Financial Officer to support its mission, current operations and programming, and strategic plan. A key member of the senior leadership team, the CFO will collaborate closely with the Director, Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, and the Board’s Finance, Investment and Audit Committees. In this role, the Chief Financial Officer will play a crucial part in maintaining the financial operations of Boscobel, provide insightful reports and analyses, and establish procedures to ensure Boscobel’s fiscal health.

    The successful candidate must be able to work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Board, and be able to integrate smoothly into the senior management team. They must be passionate about Boscobel’s mission, and be able to work in a collegial, supportive, and direct manner with the staff in a spirit of mutual trust.

    The Chief Financial Officer must be a highly skilled and experienced financial executive who has held high-level management positions for a number of years, particularly for nonprofits or cultural institutions. This person will be a strategic thinker with a collaborative management style who is thoroughly familiar with generally accepted accounting principles. The CFO will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise. In addition, this individual will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possesses sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.

    Specific Responsibilities include:

    • Manage all aspects of Boscobel’s finances, including accounting and tax filings, audits, risk management, and financial planning and analysis.
    • Act as the primary staff contact to the Finance and Investment Committee and Audit Committee of the Board.
    • Monitor Boscobel ‘s financial performance and develop long range financial plans in accordance with strategic priorities defined by the Board.
    • Ensure accurate and timely financial accounts of Boscobel operations.
    • Develop with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee annual, multi-year, and project/grant budgets.
    • Collaborate with department heads on strategic goals and budgets.
    • Present financial reports on a timely basis to the Executive Director and to the Finance Committee.
    • In a timely manner, manage the Annual Financial Audit, working with Boscobel’s auditor and Audit Committee.
    • Work with the Board’s Investment Committee to monitor performance and risk management of Boscobel’s Endowment and to ensure that withdrawals from the Endowment comply with donor and Board restrictions.
    • Manage banking, investment and insurance relationships and investment accounts.
    • Review all insurance policies of Boscobel including liability, property, and D&O and report annually to the Finance Committee of the Board as to their adequacy.
    • Develop and maintain accurate cash flow forecasts; optimize working capital by working with the team to manage receivables, payables, and inventory levels; collaborate with financial institutions and other external partners to negotiate favorable terms for the organization.
    • Maintain a system of accounting controls, policies, and procedures.
    • Work closely with the Development department to manage grants and contributions and assist in related budgets and expenditure reports.
    • Manage and maintain all of Boscobel’s information technology and records retention, report on a periodic basis on the adequacy of existing systems and provide recommendations for improvement.
    • Support retail team to identify opportunities and mitigate risks associated with retail operations, including mission-aligned procurement, inventory management, pricing strategies, and potential losses.
    • Identify, select and work with contractors and consultants as necessary.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field, or equivalent work experience; advanced degree preferred (while a CPA is not necessary, knowledge of accounting principles is essential).
    • 5 to 8 years of experience in a leadership role in a finance department, preferably in cultural institutions or other nonprofit organizations. Experience with government contracts a plus.
    • Knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting practices.
    • Experience with annual audits.
    • High level of emotional intelligence and the ability to manage difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
    • Strong business instincts, able to quickly identify problems, synthesize a variety of factors to make effective and practical decisions and develop an appropriate course of action.
    • Proven high standards of performance, and eager to pursue aggressive goals, working hard and smartly to achieve them. Must be persistent, decisive, resourceful, proactive, and results oriented.
    • Understands programmatic activity and has the ability to convey information to people with varying levels of financial expertise.
    • Experience in managing and upgrading software and information technology.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Team player with a collaborative ethos and strong supervisory skills; must be able to build consensus internally and externally.
