    Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency (PHSSCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of individuals affected by sickle cell disease and other related conditions in North Carolina those with high-risk health problems. Since its inception, PHSSCA has provided essential services such as community education, counseling, genetic screening, case management, and advocacy to individuals and families in nineteen counties across North Carolina. The organization also actively participates in research projects and public health initiatives to advance treatment options and provide comprehensive care to those living with sickle cell disease and high-risk health conditions. PHSSCA is committed to empowering communities through outreach, partnerships, and education, focusing on health equity and advocacy for underserved populations.

    The Role

    The Executive Director will lead a respected organization with a powerful mission, ensuring PHSSCA’s work transforms lives and communities through education, support, and innovative healthcare approaches. The Executive Director will drive this transformation, inspiring others and advancing the agency’s mission with passion and purpose.

    The Executive Director (ED) at PHSSCA will have a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of those affected by sickle cell disease and other high-risk health conditions. PHSSCA has three operational divisions, inclusive of sickle cell care, HIV testing, and health disparities. The ED will shape the future of PHSSCA, ensuring its programs and services exceed the needs of the communities it serves.

    The ED will build upon the agency’s strong foundation, expanding its reach across nineteen counties and ensuring access to compassionate care, education, and support. They will lead a dedicated team, develop innovative programs, foster partnerships, and raise public awareness of sickle cell disease challenges.

    As the key advocate and voice of PHSSCA, the ED will also secure the organization’s financial health, lead fundraising efforts, and ensure sustainable growth. This is a chance to lead with purpose, collaborate with diverse communities, and make a meaningful impact on public health, social equity, and sickle cell care.

    Impact Areas

    Visionary Leadership & Strategic Planning

    • Lead the agency's long-term and short-term strategic planning processes.
    • Align organizational goals with the evolving needs of the sickle cell and public health community.
    • Inspire staff and stakeholders with a clear vision for PHSSCA’s future.
    • Ensure the agency remains on the cutting edge of healthcare innovation.

    Program Excellence & Community Impact

    • Develop, implement, and evaluate high-impact programs based on community needs.
    • Ensure program compliance and successful delivery of services across seven counties.
    • Oversee the quality of care, education, and advocacy services provided to clients.
    • Expand service reach to underserved populations, increasing access to vital resources.

    Financial Sustainability & Fundraising Growth

    • Lead fundraising campaigns and develop relationships with donors and community partners.
    • Secure financial resources through grants, in-kind donations, and strategic partnerships.
    • Oversee the agency’s financial management, ensuring fiscal responsibility and growth.
    • Develop long-term financial strategies that ensure the sustainability of PHSSCA's programs.
    • Oversight of government grants in addition to federal, state, and county compliance.

    Talent & Team Development

    • Recruit, train, supervise, and develop management staff aligned with PHSSCA’s mission.
    • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and growth-oriented workplace culture.
    • Ensure that staff are provided with opportunities for professional development and growth.
    • Oversee staff performance reviews, work plans, and role alignment with agency objectives.

    Advocacy & Community Engagement

    • Serve as the public face of PHSSCA, promoting the organization’s mission and impact.
    • Build and maintain relationships with local, state, and national organizations and stakeholders.
    • Advocate for sickle cell and public health awareness, treatment, and healthcare policies that improve community outcomes.
    • Represent PHSSCA at key community and healthcare functions to elevate its profile and impact.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Master’s degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, or a related human services field is preferred not required.
    • Knowledge of government grants in addition to federal, state, and county compliance.
    • 5-7 years of senior leadership experience in human services, healthcare, or nonprofit management.
    • Proven track record in nonprofit governance and working with a Board of Directors.
    • Strong experience in strategic planning and execution of organizational goals.
    • Demonstrated success in program development and ensuring program compliance.
    • Proven ability in financial management, including budget oversight and fiscal sustainability.
    • Experience leading fundraising efforts and securing funding from diverse sources (grants, donors, corporate sponsors).
    • Skilled in staff recruitment, development, and fostering a collaborative team culture.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in public speaking and advocacy.
    • Proven ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with community partners, funders, and government agencies.
    • Cultural competence and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the organization’s work.
