How to Start a Cooking Club
A cooking club is a small group of people who gather on a regular basis to prepare a meal together.
Why this recipe matters
Sharing a meal is a simple but powerful way to build trust and strengthen our relationships. The Allotment Project notes that even eating with strangers is better than eating alone for helping us feel more connected to our community.
Recipe
1. See who wants to join.
- Krissy from the food blog “Make It Naked” advises keeping the group small (no more than 9 people) to start with.
2. Decide where and when you’ll gather.
- Would you convene weekly at one person’s house? Or perhaps a friend of yours has access to the kitchen at a local community space once a month? Choose whatever location and meeting frequency that would be sustainable for your group!
3. Decide on a host.
- Depending on which members feel most comfortable around the kitchen, alternate who gets to lead each meeting. Ideally, everyone has a turn.
4. Keep things organized.
- Make sure to have a designated club member who is responsible for sending out a weekly email with suggested dates for your next meeting based on mutual calendar availability.
5. Send the menu in advance.
- After the host chooses whatever your group will make next, they should send out an email with the recipe as well as any required ingredients it requires with enough time for group members to prepare.

How this recipe has nurtured a community
“Eating is so intimate. It’s very sensual. When you invite someone to sit at your table and you want to cook for them, you’re inviting a person into your life.”
