    Position Summary

    Under general supervision of a deputy unit director (Assistant Attorney General–Supervisor), this position enhances the capacity of local communities to develop and strengthen effective law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women and to develop and strengthen victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women. This position works toward a prosecutorial response to violence against women that keeps victims safe, reduces secondary victimization and trauma, and holds perpetrators accountable. This position provides technical assistance and training statewide. This position represents the State of Wisconsin in circuit or appellate courts in the prosecution of cases and appeals related to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This position requires working professionally and collaboratively within the division and unit as well as on interdivisional and interdepartmental projects, assignments, and other tasks. This position also performs grant reporting functions and other duties as assigned.

    Salary Information

    The Assistant Attorney General position is in pay schedule 09 and pay range 75. The starting pay will be between $36.72-$56.37/hour (approx. $76,377 to $117,249 annually). Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

    Job Details

    Based on current funding, this project position is expected to end December 31, 2027. As a project employee, you will continue to receive all rights and privileges afforded to original probationary employees by state law, with the exception of tenure, transfer, reinstatement and layoff benefits.

    This position may be eligible to work remotely as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial in-person training period. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement. Options for remote work will be discussed during the interview.

    An internet connection with speed capable of performing all remote work duties is required.

    Occasional in-state travel will be required. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.

    The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

    Qualifications

    Please address the following in your resume and/or letter of qualifications.

    Minimally qualified applicants must have experience in the following:

    • Serving as first or second chair on multiple felony jury trials.
    • Preparing and drafting pleadings, including complaints, motions and briefs in felony domestic abuse cases.
    • Analyzing facts and evidence in criminal domestic abuse cases and assisting law enforcement with investigations.

    In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have training or professional experience in the following:

    • Serving as first chair on multiple felony domestic abuse jury trials.
    • Prosecuting multiple complex felony domestic abuse cases.
    • Experience mentoring, training, and/or advising prosecutors.
    • Knowledge of pretrial litigation strategies, including but not limited to:
      • Writing notices to present expert witness testimony.
      • Presenting medical, DNA, or other forensic evidence to juries.
      • Drafting and arguing forfeiture by wrongdoing motions, motions to admit Other Acts Evidence, and motions excluding irrelevant evidence.

    Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.
