    The Financial Analyst/Senior Account is responsible for the longevity & prosperity of Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Program (the “Program”) by leading various aspects of the financial analysis, accounting, and financial reporting for the Program. Reporting directly to the Controller/Director of Finance, the Position provides support to various activities of the finance and accounting functions of the Program.

    The Position must be regarded as: a highly effective communicator; cooperative across teams; able to effectively collaborate with all levels of staff; and a dependable source of support to its peers within the Finance team and all of the Program’s teammates.

    The successful incumbent in this position demonstrates experience initiating and sustaining a high level of accountability resulting in positive outcomes and is expected to embrace the Mission and Values of the Program.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Accounting, Financial Reporting, Compliance, and Internal Controls
    • Accounting
    • Follows financial and accounting systems, processes, and controls as documented and assists with updating the same as warranted
    • Makes a variety of defined daily, monthly and annual transactions and entries into the accounting systems
    • Ensures that auditable backup is always present for each transaction and entry made into the accounting systems
    • Assists in the month-end close process, including but not limited to the detailed analysis of general ledger accounts
    • Financial reporting (internal and external)
    • Provides, presents, and explains internal/specialty/ad hoc financial reporting; also, highlights opportunities and threats that this reporting and related analyses might indicate
    • Compliance
    • Follows all documented accounting policies and procedures
    • Assists with, prepares schedules, and provides necessary supporting documentation in support of internal audits and external financial/compliance audits (CPA firm, taxing authorities, etc.)
    • Assists with the preparation of all local, state, and federal tax reporting and form filings
    • Internal Controls and Audits
    • Prepares/completes and maintains a variety of monthly balance sheet and key P&L account reconciliations and timely communicates any questionable transactions
    • Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A)
    • Assists with creating and maintaining effective forecasting and budgeting models and related tools that support the Program’s decision making
    • Provides commentary and key insights into variance analysis (actuals vs budget and prior year) for the Program
    • Assists with the development of other decision support reporting tools
    • Assistance with the producing of monthly, year-to-date actuals, and key metrics reporting on a monthly basis
    • Information Technology
    • Participates in the planning for and implementation of new and/or updated information, accounting, and administrative systems
    • Helps to eliminate redundancies and inefficiencies throughout the Program’s administrative and information systems
    • Follows data and systems protection practices that protect against loss and/or unauthorized access to sensitive, private, etc. financial and employee information
    • Contributes to Team Success
    • Partners with and act as a sounding board, constructive questioner, brainstorming partner, and advisor to the Director of Finance
    • Participates in decisions dealing with tactical decisions and operational pursuits
    • Effectively collaborates with other departments and interdisciplinary teams
    • Implements policies, procedures, and processes as agreed to by the Program
    • Planning
    • Participates in the Program’s tactical and operational planning
    • Assists with developing and maintaining forward-looking financial plans and models
    • Provides analyses that align with and provide insights into the effectiveness of plans and budgets
    • Other
    • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to forecast and plan ahead
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills (verbal and written)
    • A collaborative team player and effective individual contributor
    • Ability to handle multiple priorities under time constraints and manage deadlines independently

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent related experience
    • 5 years progressively more responsible accounting experience
    • Public accounting experience preferred
    • Strong systems, automation, and streamlining orientation with:
    • company-wide database management systems
    • desktop productivity tools (especially MS Office tools and expert or advanced skills with Microsoft Excel)
