    The Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) is accepting applications for a Staff Services Manager I (Supervising Caseworker). Whether you’re an experienced paralegal looking to enter a managerial role or a seasoned manager looking to work in public defense, OSPD has the resources, tools, and strategies to aid you in the next steps of your career.

    Caseworkers at OSPD work collaboratively with a team of attorneys and other Caseworkers to provide paralegal support in capital appeals and other matters in the California Supreme Court, the District Courts of Appeal, the Superior Courts of California, and the Supreme Court of the United States. As the Supervising Caseworker, you will be working supervisor, applying your skills as a paralegal in capital appeals and other matters, and sharing your knowledge and experience by providing the Caseworker Unit with expertise, oversight, and training. You will also collaborate with the Managing Caseworker on general program and policy formulation, assignments, and personnel matters, and you will advocate for the Caseworker Unit in a managerial setting.

    Ideal candidates for this position will have experience

    • providing paralegal support in appellate proceedings,
    • training, coaching, and mentoring teammates; and
    • advocating for organizational improvement.
