    Executive Director, Indiana Conservation Voters (ICV)

    Summary

    ICV seeks a strategic, politically savvy, and experienced Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization’s next phase. This role requires a leader who can navigate Indiana’s political landscape, generate meaningful environmental policy, build coalitions, and drive political engagement while ensuring strong team, financial, and organizational management.

    The ideal candidate is a visionary yet hands-on leader who inspires action, fosters collaboration, and executes ICV’s mission with emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and strong relationship-building across ideological and cultural divides. They are a listener and collaborator who knows when to push forward and when to work behind the scenes. They are strategic, adaptable, and able to navigate relationships with authenticity, discretion, and respect.

    Key Responsibilities

    The ED will oversee all aspects of ICV’s work:

    • Organizational Leadership & Management (30%)
      • Lead and support a small but high-performing team in a collaborative and inclusive working atmosphere.
      • Oversee all aspects of the organization, ensuring effective internal operations, including people management, budgeting, internal systems, communication, and strategy.
    • Fundraising & Financial Sustainability (20%)
      • Oversee budgets, reporting, and compliance for ICV (501c4), Indiana Conservation Fund (501c3), and PAC, ensuring financial sustainability in partnership with the Board and Legal Counsel.
      • Develop and implement a diversified fundraising strategy, including foundation grants, PAC contributions, and individual donations.
      • Build relationships with existing and prospective funders, ensuring strong stewardship and long-term sustainability.
    • Political & Electoral Strategy (15%)
      • Oversee and lead ICV’s electoral engagement, PAC activities, candidate recruitment, and campaign support.
      • Strategically navigate Indiana’s political landscape, working effectively across party lines where necessary.
      • Assess opportunities for electoral impact while maintaining long-term movement-building strategies.
    • Policy & Advocacy Strategy (15%)
      • Guide ICV’s involvement in key policy areas, including clean energy, water stewardship, and natural resources conservation.
      • Support policy staff and lobbyists in advocating for legislation and engaging in policy coalitions.
    • Coalition Building & External Relations (10%)
      • Be a trusted and impactful political partner to Indiana’s environmental and conservation partners and a respected and effective environmental and conservation partner to Indiana’s political community.
      • Strengthen relationships with funders, labor, business, and environmental organizations at local, regional, and national levels.
      • Serve as the public face of ICV, representing the organization in advocacy spaces, media, and key coalitions.
    • Board Management and Relations (5%)
      • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board, ensuring clear communication and strategic alignment through productive board meetings
      • Engage the Board in governance, fundraising, and strategy while maintaining appropriate boundaries between board oversight and staff management.
      • Prepare and present regular updates on financials, programs, and strategic initiatives.
      • Support future board recruitment and development, helping to build a diverse and high-functioning governing body.
    • Communications & Public Engagement (5%)
      • Oversee the development of ICV’s public messaging strategy, ensuring strategic, timely, and nimble communication.
      • Ensure ICV engages the public in a politically effective way while maintaining credibility and respect among diverse stakeholders.
      • Implement membership growth, outreach, and mobilization strategies.

    The ED may also perform other duties as required.

    This is a full time and overtime exempt position. Given the critical and time sensitive nature of the work of ICV/ICF, it will be expected that you will be available when the need arises to address the aspirational goals of a rapidly growing young organization, while working with urgency to affect progressive changes to the policies and infrastructure in Indiana.

    Travel may be required to meet with current and prospective members of ICV/ICF, current and prospective grantees and donors, and to attend hearings, workshops, conferences or other events as you or the Boards of Directors may deem necessary both within and outside of Indiana.

    Qualifications & Experience

    Must-Have Qualifications

    • Leadership & Management
      • At least 3-5 years of management experience in nonprofit, advocacy, or political settings managing and developing teams and fostering a collaborative and high-performance work culture.
      • Ability to listen with an open mind and humility, give and receive critical feedback, balance perspectives, and create a culture of achievement.
      • Ability to foster trust, communicate effectively, and engage respectfully with a wide range of individuals from different backgrounds and experiences.
      • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace and experience in implementing inclusive and equitable leadership practices
    • Fundraising & Financial Sustainability
      • Experience managing program and/or organizational finance, managing and overseeing budgets and operations with sound judgment to consult relevant experts when needed.
      • Willingness to build and manage relationships with existing and prospective funders and donors.
    • Political & Electoral Strategy
      • 3-5 years political and/or campaign experience, with a willingness to learn and become an expert in Indiana’s political landscape and electoral processes.
      • Ability to assess political opportunities and risks, balancing short-term electoral work with long-term movement-building.
      • Experience working in a conservative or politically challenging state, demonstrating the ability to navigate complex political environments.
    • Policy & Advocacy Strategy
      • Experience developing and/or advocacy on behalf of environmental policy and/or conservation.
    • Coalition Building & External Relations
      • Experience in managing, nurturing, and building strategic alliances and coalitions within and across sectors.
    • Board Management & Relations
      • Experience working with and engaging a nonprofit board, ensuring effective governance, fundraising, and strategic oversight while establishing clear boundaries between board and staff roles while fostering a productive relationship.
      • Strong skills in board meeting facilitation, strategic planning, and board development.
    • Communications & Public Engagement
      • Confident, clear, and concise public speaker for internal and external communications, including but not limited to coalition and community meetings, media interviews, speaker panels, and private meetings with funders, stakeholders, and members.
      • Proven experience in membership outreach, mobilization, grasstops and/or grassroots organizing.

    Nice-to-Have Qualifications

    • Prior experience leading a start-up or growing organization, particularly one balancing political and advocacy work.
    • Existing relationships within Indiana’s political or environmental landscape to accelerate coalition-building.
    • Experience developing and executing fundraising strategies, including securing foundation grants, major gifts, and PAC contributions.
    • Ability to work effectively with policymakers, coalitions, and advocacy partners to advance legislative priorities.
    • Experience managing digital organizing, online advocacy campaigns, or voter mobilization strategies.
    • Knowledge of nonprofit legal compliance for C3, C4, and PAC organizations beyond financial oversight.

    Compensation & Benefits

    Salary Range: $115,000 - $135,000 commensurate with experience. As we conduct a national search, we understand that salary expectations can vary based on location.
