    Description

    About the Organization

The Cahn Fellowship aims to improve urban public education by focusing on the nation’s best public school principals, propelling them into even more effective leadership and retaining them in public education. By leveraging leaders at the school level, we improve the education and life possibilities for about 200,000 urban students now. We expect growth to a half million within five years. As noted by the Wallace Foundation “it is difficult to envision a higher return on investment in K-12 education than the cultivation of high-quality school leadership.”

The Cahn Fellowship is comprised of three programs. Our original program, The Distinguished Principals Fellowship is a yearlong professional development experience built to elevate leadership and enhance job satisfaction. Starting in New York City in 2003, the Fellowship has grown to be a national program with participants from Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles in addition to NYC. We expect Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. to join next year. Our second and newest program is the Leadership Lab for promising principals at the 3-4 year experience point, the time at which roughly half quit. Our first cohort of 16 from NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami will double next year and is on track to expand to 6 or 7 cities in 2024. Our third program is for our 500+ alumni, those still principals, and those who have gone into district leadership. The alumni program takes the form of conferences as well as social events. We are proud that 40% of our alumni have assumed district management roles including the chief executive positions of the New York City and Chicago Public Schools.
