The Melting Pot Foundation U.S. is a U.S. nonprofit corporation founded in 2015 and based in Brooklyn, New York. The Melting Pot Foundation U.S. is a sister organization of the Danish entity The Melting Pot Foundation, a commercial, non-profit and charitable fund whose purposes, through activities that have food, food craft and entrepreneurship as recurring elements, enhance the quality of life and future opportunities among vulnerable and marginalized population groups in Denmark and in selected developing countries. The target group is particularly but not exclusively children and young people with criminal backgrounds, refugees and immigrants. The company was founded by in 2012 by Claus Meyer, who has identified the need for community-sourced culinary solutions for the public health crisis in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York.The Melting Pot seeks to develop a community culinary center in Brownsville. We are developing a site that will accommodate a teaching kitchen, bakery/cafe, and a 45-seat dining area as well as additional classroom and demonstration space, available for use by existing community organizations. The restaurant will serve affordable, healthy, delicious food to the neighborhood. Our educational program lasts 1-year and prepares students to work in any kitchen in the city at a high level of competency. Students will apprentice in the restaurant on-site. We are currently training a pilot cohort of 6 students at a nearby church kitchen. We expect to begin building out or final home immediately, to be completed late 2016.
